General Anupong Paojinda, Interior Minister

Interior Minister General Anupong Paojinda is accelerating water-storage plans as the drought problems spread, Currently, 18 provinces accounting for 20 per cent of total area in the country are facing the impact of drought.

“Four provinces are affected by the shortage of water for consumption, while 14 others lack sufficient water for irrigation,” he said.

“We have advised farmers on what kind of plants should be planted under the circumstance while the Cabinet has approved a special budget to tackle the issue".

He added that related authorities, such as the Department of Groundwater Resources and the army, had been tasked with the drilling of artesian wells.

"The operation is divided into two periods, from the end of 2019 to April 2020 and from May to July this year," he said.

Off coarse you have, lots of plants grow in dry barren rice fields! more nonsense............

Nasty Farmers not listening to the fine advice given by the caring "government" or more blatant anti-farmer PR?

Is there no way to collect and store rainwater during the rain season?  At least for consumption

Advised on what type of plants to grow.

Would that be Cactus?

Read what the man said. They have done nnothing. Sod all.

And they'll be completely amazed when this year is even worse than last year. Good job most senior people are soldiers eh? That must be their employmeny guarantee, because skill, experience and effectiveness certainly isn't - they're only good for getting their snouts in the trough. Still, the Thai people don't fire them so I suppose they must be happy with them.

The hub of non-performance and non-responsibility.

Little point "stepping up to water storage plans". The problem is that there is b*gg*r all water to store in the first placem and unlikely to be any for at least six months.

They should have built more lakes right after the big flooding 7 years ago. But thai lack a vision....and they wouldn't listen to the experts.

They don’t seem to be doing it. Lakes seem to evaporate quickly after months of no rain, assuming they are not fed by springs.  Besides, the current reservoir system is not doing the job.  I was thinking smaller scale, for small communities clean drinking water only-like this:

Poor people can’t afford clean water, and all the standing water in Thailand is polluted

Countermanded by other plans:

  •  “The [Royal Irrigation] department will drain water in dams nationwide to solve the high water-salinity problem,” he said. “We can confirm that there will be sufficient water for the drought season.”
  • "the Royal Irrigation Department will increase the water drained from the Chao Phraya Dam from 85 cubic metres per second to 100 cubic metres per second, starting from January 8 onwards."

There needs to be a UNIFORM national water management plan!
