What a performance, Passport, Bank Book,House Book.Required 10 sheets of paper, some of which had to be signed twice next select a new pin and entered 4 times.Next came a request for 300Bt for the new  card.

  • The changeover date has been known for months.   Changed ATM card at BBL last month. Just needed old card plus id. Agree quite a few places to sign but that's normal. No charge to change.

It seems since 15th January cards with only magnetic strips will not work in retail shops in Thailand anymore.

You can still get money at the ATM with the old cards but it seems you can't use them i.e. in the supermarket anymore.

And that is independent from the bank.

Ref the 6 digit PIN.. hardest part is remembering to add the 5 and 6 to my original 4 number pin.

So the change over has been known for months,   how did  you get the know.Nothing on Bualuang Online Site.  Anyhow no reseller in this area uses pin number ,and laughingly the  aassistant in the bank said  NO NEED TO SIGN THE CARD.  THat is fair enough as no one ever checks the signature against my card.Instead they like to sight my pink ID card, but only a glance.TIT

Changed my card in December as my original visa debit card had been skimmed and 10k was removed from my account. Still waiting to get the money back. They no longer give visa cards. It is now Union Pay or Mastercard, otherwise a Rabbit thingy. They seem to be pushing Union Pay but was no problem when I said I preferred Mastercard. No charge.

I actually prefer the Mastercard as it seems more secure and I get an SMS naming the actual store when I use it. Before I only got notice that the card had been used if above Baht 500 and the store was not identified.

I am sorry to hear that they have been so bad to you. So much work and a hideous sum of 300 baht for your new card! It´s outrageuos! A high value customer like you should get it all for free.

Never been charged for an ATM card before??? They have been deducting 200 baht for you old card per year as a minimum amount. The new card are 300 per year. What do you think is wrong with that. Do you think they have been giving you discount on the yearly fee for the card?

I'm going to cancel my ATM card before its issued next year, I'll just use Bangkok Bank as a transfer account

used my old card today at an ATM - no problems.

I got new cards over a year ago.

Not directly related to Isaan. Moved to the business and banking forum.

popped into bKK bank yesterday lunchtime with a work colleague as he a a 4 pin card and had to upgrade.

Signed copy of passport and work permit along with passbook, all done and dusted in under 10 minutes and the card was free.

Old news for those that do not live under a grape vine. Been lots of notices on bank websites, in the newspapers, on ThaiVisa, etc.  And regarding never been charged for a Bangkok Bank card, well, once a year they charge a renewal fee of approx Bt200 to Bt300....it's automatically deducted directly from your bank acct.  Changed my Bangkok Bank magnetic strip only cards to chipped cards around 2 years ago.  To change the cards only my passport was required.

Had my chipped Bangkok Bank card for 3 + 1/2 years , has a 4 digit pin .

Gf informs me that I need to change it to a 6 digit pin.

Went to nearest BB they inform me I have to go to the branch I opened the account at with bank book and passport.

Okay, drove 30 minutes to the branch for them to tell me as my card has still 1 + 1/2 years on it and is chipped am good to go !!

But when I do change it will be Union Pay ☹️

They also offer Mastercard now.  But if you don't ask for a Mastercard they will provide a Union Pay card.

Still works with AliExpress.

As long as it works online and in ATMs, I'll keep using it.

I save 200B a yr by not having an ATM card.

I've linked my BBL credit card to my savings account to make ATM cash debit directly from the account .

I was told this will only work within Thailand. Outside of Thailand it will be credit card cash advance, where I prefer to use Schwab ATM card.

Also was told it will work with BBL ATMs only but it also worked when I used it on an SCB ATM by mistake.

English is my third language.

Most banks offered a no charge replacement chip card during a set time period quit some time ago. I was notified by BBL and Bank to change mine and did so about two years ago.

Two 0's is easy enough.

Yes, it's the chip that is required, not the number of digits in the PIN.

Talk about gratuitous exaggeration...

House Book?

Required 10 sheets of paper?

New pin entered 4 times?

Yes, right, of course all that was needed.   They did it especially for you, no one else needs to do it.

How is it "more secure"  than Union Pay?

Trust you to spoil it for the OP and all his wild exaggeration!

Cards can be issued at any branch and when you change you have the choice of Union Pay, Mastercard or both.

In what did the Chinese "take a big steak [sic] of ownership" that's affected ATM cards?  It sure wasn't a stake in Bangkok Bank.
