webfact
Teachers' Day in Thailand: Yet more violence meted out to female students As national Teachers' Day was celebrated in Thailand yesterday a video posted online showed a teacher viciously attacking female students with a stick. Corporal punishment is illegal in Thailand and teachers should be dismissed but rarely are. The damning footage was posted on Facebook by Jutthamat Foi Thong. It came with the tagline question: "Cruel teacher - is that over the top or what?" In the video the male teacher is using a stick to whack the behinds of several students; one of these or a friend was secretly filming. The teacher can be heard to say: Why are you protecting your bottom? He then uses a Thai swear word "sanlaew" that might be translated as "b*tch or b***ard. Most Thai netizens said this was hardly appropriate behavior on behalf of the teacher though many said there was probably a reason for the punishment. Corporal punishment is illegal in Thailand, notes Thaivisa, but is still widespread. The following can be found online: Corporal punishment is illegal in Thailand under the Child Protection Act, and yet many share the view that it is commonplace in Thai schools and even in kindergartens. The law states: “Any school employee who hits a child should be immediately dismissed and be subject to review of their professional licence.” Thaivisa notes that in reality few teachers are ever dismissed with most being forgiven by parents after they say they are sorry with a "wai". Some are disciplined by the school or education authority. They should be given a public thrashing in front of the whole school, then sacked. That should slow a few of these sadistic scumbags down a little. There is NO excuse whatsoever for beating children. 19 1 2

thaibeachlovers
There may be a psychological reason concerning men and girls that they desire but can't have. I'm not saying this is the case in this situation, but worth looking into with a proper psychological study. Not many men go into teaching these days, in NZ at any rate, so don't get much of these sorts of problems. 3
Popular Post DannyCarlton
After watching this, please don't tell me that Thailand is anything other than a backward 3rd World country. No place for this type of behaviour in a modern society. If this had happened in the UK, the teacher would have got jail time. 25 1 1

A proper 'Psychological Study' of the majority of Thai people would end with them being thrown into Asylum's. Popular Post thaiowl
Bullying is a national pastime, learned from parents, teachers etc etc. I believe this is why many locals are afraid to give an opinion or an answer to a question. They are so afraid of making a mistake, which has previously been punished by humiliation, bullying or corporal punishment. Teaching at local schools is via rote learning, aided by humiliation and corporal punishment. As a result, student intuition and creativity is extinguished.

Popular Post PMZ
I have two sons, 17 and 20 years, western, but grew up in Bangkok. Neither parent has ever issued any physical punishment and nor has their school (Intl school in Bangkok). They have grown to be fine young men (not without the odd problem along the way of course), but it is perfectly possible to instil discipline and respect without physical punishment. 2

And it's part of the reason why things are so screwed up here, and ordinary Thais seem unfazed/undeterred by all kinds of violence. Because that's what they've been put through as children, and so as adults, engaging in the same behavior against others is simply an extension of what they've already endured. Exactly. It's too bad that many foreigners can't see this. Open you eyes! Thailand is not a free country. Much of it's population is brainwashed to see abuse of those who don't conform in school, work and society as acceptable. We can't talk about it much here of course. Why do people who come from societies that give you free speech and freddom to criticize your leaders support fascism here? The teacher whipping the kid is normal. The police and military abusing people are normal. Fascists control Thailand. They've already broken the wills and bent the minds.
yellowboat
Patients and forgiveness are the average Thai's great strength and weakness. Violence has no place anywhere let alone a place of learning. Sadly, parents probably got slapped around too when they were in school, so maybe somewhat expected to happen. Teachers were absolutely petrified of my father, that included the football coaches.
Popular Post canuckamuck
Talk to Thai kids about it. They don't deny it happens, but they don't think it's a big deal. I have asked more than once, it usually gets a shrug. I think Thailand has much bigger problems in the schools then this.

DepDavid
Wasn’t there an article in recent days indicating teachers make up 16% of outstanding loans equivalent to 3 million baht per teacher? They are probably all on edge trying to figure out how they are going to pay that back. Not an excuse of course but just an interesting side note!
