Bids opened for U-tapao Airport project

Three groups of companies remain in the bidding to develop U-tapao International Airport and Eastern Airport City, with envelopes containing their financial proposals formally opened on Friday (January 17).

 

The third round of document submissions was ceremoniously marked in the Navy Club Building at Royal Thai Navy headquarters in Bangkok.

 

Rear Admiral Kirkchai Wajjanaporn, secretary-general of the bid selection committee, said the winner would be announced in March. “The contract signing will take place immediately after the Cabinet endorses the result.”

 

Vying for the contract are BBS Joint Venture, the Grande Consortium and, despite a legal challenge over earlier documents being submitted minutes too late, the Charoen Pokphand (CP)-led Thana Holding Consortium.

 

A selection committee source said BBS appeared to have pitched the best proposal price by far, pledging Bt301 billion in returns to the state – three times the amount cited by the other two bidders.

 

BBS Joint Venture includes Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, Bangkok Airways and BTS Group Holdings.

Why is the military involved in a civilian airport development or any civilian bid selection committee for that matter? It seems overall to say that matters of the State are matters of the military and not exclusive to the Thai electorate.

Rather interesting actually. How many major international airport in the world are military bases? Sort of gets you in the mood right after landing when you see fighter jets parked next to your gate, eh?

US built Utapao as a major B-52 base during the Vietnam War. Bombs and other supplies unloaded at Sattahip naval port & trucked over to nearby Utapao.  After the war US turned it over completely to the Thai Navy.

Darwin, Australia.

Don Meuang in Bangkok. Even has the RTAF golf course running down the fairway between the runways.

 

Anyway, with regard to the OP, I reckon the laggard 7-eleven people have this one all sewn up.

Three times fatter envelopes = a successful bid.

Another source on twitter said CP had the highest bid by miles. Obsufaction.

Quite simple: the army/airforce owns that airport. As they also do with a few others.

Anyone know what's going on with the plans for an airport in Phang Nha? I heard it's stuck trying to acquire private land. Also think I'd read they had the land.

Actually it is the Navy which also owns most of Sattahip including all the best beaches which farang is either charged to visit up to 100Bhatt a day or banned from completely on grounds of security, but if you wish you can see really good pics of the area on Google earth so no need to send the spies in.

And if they need to be involved, witch they don't why the bloody navy and. not the Air Force?

They need something to keep all those Admirals occupied - after all, they don't have many LGBs (Large Grey Boats) and most of the ones which they do have are broken...

I landed at Utapao about 2 hours ago, no fighter jets to be seen and far less hassle than DMK or BKK.

 

No notable military presence anywhere nearby the terminal either.

CP will get the green flag.
