Industry Ministry to take measures to encourage sugarcane planters to stop burning the fields

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Pollution Control has reported the burning of sugarcane in plantations to prepare for a new planting season has been a major cause of PM 2.5 airborne dust, particularly from December to April during which sugarcane in plantations is harvested. The burning activity is likely to have a severe effect in the dry season when there’s low humidity in the air.

 

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit recently discussed the matter with four organizations representing sugarcane planters: the National Federation of Sugarcane Planters; the Northeastern Sugarcane Planters Association; the United Association of Sugarcane Planters of Thailand and the Federation of Sugarcane Planters of Thailand. The Ministry of Industry plans to assist sugarcane planters by providing about 130 baht in aid for a ton of fresh sugarcane bound for sugar making factories.

 

The Office of the Sugarcane and Sugar Committee, is to propose measures to provide a sum of 10 billion baht in immediate aid to sugarcane planters in the 2019/2020 season. The sum will be divided into two parts - one amounting to 6.5 billion baht for aid in sugarcane production and the other amounting to 3.5 billion baht for planters who harvest fresh sugarcane.

 

The planters who have harvested fresh sugarcane and supplied it to sugar factories will be given over 1,000 baht per ton, meaning their fresh sugarcane will receive about 130 baht more than burnt sugarcane per ton. The measures are part of the effort to reduce PM 2.5 airborne dust particles and alleviate the woes of the sugarcane planters. About 50% of all sugarcane supplied to sugar factories is expected to be fresh sugarcane this year.

Our local sugarcane factory said they refused to take burnt cane but they are!! 

They were encouraged to do this but failed.

Unless people acknowledge the health associated dangerous and make this a criminal issue where people are actually punished it wont ever change. 

People really need to stand up for whats right that benefits all but unfortunately in my experience thais only stand up for handouts....sad.

same  here  told not to  burn by head    of village, everyone ignored it  except  stupid  falangs  like me  who spent 8000 baht  more to  mash  it  up  then plough it  back in

It is very far from being enough;
it's even a drop in the sea.

130 baht more for one ton harvested.
It is clear that these people who live all their lives in air-conditioned offices never set a foot in a sugar cane plantation at the time of harvest;
To cut fresh cane, therefore not burnt it is a real obstacle course, not to mention the poisonous animals, snakes and other scorpions which have made their nests there;
Burning is not only used to facilitate cutting but to dislodge these unwanted inhabitants.

You're right people do need to stand up for what's right they need to stand up just before they get carted of to jail for daring to oppose.Your experience with Thais might be somewhat limited if the only Thais you know will only stand up for handouts.For some Thais the only time they get money is from handouts as the money they deserve to get for there labours get redirected into the trough for the elite.So you want a bunch of poor hungry farmers to stand in front of a bunch of loaded guns and demand more of their money from those holding the guns,I think they might need someone brave like you to lead the way to show them how to stand in front of a loaded gun and start demanding their rights. 

What is it with all this constant "encouraging" and "urging" people to not break the law?

 

Burning fields is illegal (and not only for sugar cane).

 

So, don't "encourage" wrongdoers to reconsider their actions but instead ENFORCE the law and slap farmers who burn their fields with heavy fines. Only that way will they learn.
