Macron berates Israeli security men in tussle at Jerusalem church

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - "Go outside," French President Emmanuel Macron demanded in English in a melee with Israeli security men on Wednesday, demanding they leave a Jerusalem basilica that he visited before a Holocaust memorial conference.

 

The French tricolour has flown over the Church of St. Anne in Jerusalem's walled Old City since it was gifted by the Ottomans to French Emperor Napoleon III in 1856.

 

France views it as a provocation when Israeli police enter the church's sandstone complex, in a part of Jerusalem captured and annexed by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.

 

Wednesday's incident was a case of deja vu all over again. In 1996, France's then-president Jacques Chirac lost patience with Israeli security agents at the same church, telling one of them that his treatment was a "provocation" and threatening to get back on his plane.

 

Chirac refused to enter St. Anne until Israeli security left the site.

 

Video showed Macron, jostled in the centre of a crowded circle between his own protective detail and Israeli security personnel, including several paramilitary policemen in uniform, under an archway leading into the church.

 

Macron then stopped the shoving and shouted at the Israeli security guards in English: "I don't like what you did in front of me."

 

Lowering his voice, he then said: "Go outside. I'm sorry, you know the rules. Nobody has to provoke nobody."

 

Speaking later to reporters, Macron said the incident ended pleasantly and that he shook hands with the Israeli security officials.

 

Israeli police said that when Macron arrived at the church "there was a discussion" between Israeli and French security officers about entering with the president.

 

"When the president and the delegation finished the visit, he apologised about the incident and shook hands with the security personnel," a police statement said.

 

Macron is one of dozens of world leaders attending Thursday's World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre in Jerusalem, which will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.

 

The 42-year-old head of state had seen his visit to St. Anne as a symbolic stop underscoring France's historical influence in the region.

 

Before heading to the church, Macron walked through Jerusalem's Old City, stopping by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

 

He later visited the Muslim Noble Sanctuary that houses al-Aqsa mosque, a site revered by Jews as Temple Mount, and prayed at Judaism's Western Wall, touching the ancient stones.

To anyone who's interested to know that right now, many world leaders, king, prime ministers,  president and princes and others are gathering in Israel to commemorate the 75th year of the liberation of auschwitz and voice their support for anti semitism and racism, but let's go with the headline grabbing item of Macron braiding his bodyguards...

Chirac did something similar some 25 years ago, it improved his popularity ratings a fair bit. My guess is that Macron did his homework before coming to Israel.

But that won't take away from him that Macron is the best president France has had since Pompidou.

Had to do a little research as not French. Very bizarre statement comparing what looks to an outsider to have been a great French President to macron. France in turmoil with the longest ongoing protest in history "Yellow Vest", presiding over a France with "No Go areas". Maybe it's French humour but it's totally lost on this Jock.

Obviously your research didn't go far enough. France is in dire need of the reforms that have been carried out in most neighboring countries under leaders such as Thatcher, Kohl, Schroeder, Merkel, and others. All of Macron's predecessors have made weak attempts to reform the country but they all have given in to the pressure of the street, which is a toxic French feature . Macron is the first one who stands his ground, within reason.

Isn’t it clear the headline is directly in opposition to the story?

shouldnt the headline read:

Macron berates Israeli security men in tussle at Jerusalem church and then apologizes for it.  
 

Is it not also clearly another example of Israel/Jews being incorrectly shown in a bad light?  
 

Anti Semitic maybe??

'berates' is a fact, 'apologizes' is possible spin from police.

Should they obey, finger and eye, the orders of a character who was only elected by 43% of the registered.?
Should they submit basely.?
Admittedly, it is not too pretty, in the 2 camps, and the seed of violence is present, especially with professional thugs.

So …..anytime professionnal strikers take to the streets, they should get paid as usual and the government should bow to the pressure?

Eh! yes, and this is called "democracy".
The people exercise the powers that are lacking in the dozing snobards who do not even know how a government works and who lay out aberrant laws.
You just have to read or hear their aneries to be convinced.
Yes! we must justify their presence in government.
The people, who nonetheless have a few million souls, many of them graduates, do not have to undergo the uncultivated, irresponsible side of "representatives" of a country.

 

A striker is always professional, if not, it is a solidarity.
No, strikers are not paid.
On the other hand, if the representatives of government commissions do not attend meetings, they are paid.
Is that the answer for you?

What rights, the right to bankrupt a country?

The present France pension system is not sustainable, far, far from. Drastic measures are required, not taking these now will hurt soon, much sooner than many think.

Expected ritual political gesture from both sides .. no head of state is supposed to mutely accept foreign police trespassing the limits of its enclave - same as for an embassy. 

This is really not an issue. Nothing to do with Israeli-occupied territories (if you refer to colonial heritage).

The headline is not supported by the story.  It is misleading to say the least.
