Five charged in multi-million baht swindle - top public figures mentioned

Five people have been arrested and charged with swindling a wealthy retired engineer out of 239 million baht.

 

One of the gang claimed to be the commander of the armed forces Gen Apirat Kongsompong. 

 

The victim also believed that 100 million baht of his money was being given to deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan as a present.

 

There is no question that these officials were in any way involved. The suspects deny the charges.

 

Three men named by Naew Na as alleged ringleader Apichart, Thatsaphol and Pakorn and two women called Patcharaporn and Phattraporn have been arrested. 

 

They have  been charged with colluding in public fraud, falsifying documentation and providing false evidence to police. Phattraporn faces one less charge. 

 

The charges follow a complaint by Narit Sarnsak last year that he had been swindled. (Naew Na called him Narip but he is believed to be Narit a 79 year old retired engineer). 

 

Back in 2012 Narit signed a loan deal with Apichart after the two were introduced in connection with a land deal.

 

Checks bounced after he asked for the return of his money. 

 

One of the accomplices then claimed to be the chief of the Anti Money Laundering Office Pol Col Seehanat Prayoonrat and asked to borrow 34 million baht to avoid being transferred from his position. 

 

Given that it is known that high level government positions are routinely bought and sold, the wealthy former engineer was not surprisingly sucked into believing the claims, notes Thaivisa. 

 

In another part of the case one of the accomplices claimed to be army chief Gen Apirat. After gaining the trust of the victim they managed to borrow 100 million baht - money that it was claimed would be given to DMP Prawit as a New Year gift. 

 

Land plots also changed hands as handsome profits were promised.

The filth on this country is waist deep and i just wish that one day some really big names are implicated in one of these disgusting affairs and have no way of squirming out of it !

I have a brother in law who is an engineer since more than 20 years in a multinational company in Rayong;
he earns a very good living but he is very far away from being able to put so much money aside ..

 

one of his uncles (who is also one of my uncles by marriage) who is now retired , was director of public health for the province of Udon Thani; a senior official;

he certainly put a few million odds; he built a superb house in the city center at Udon Thani;
but it would surprise me very much that he could have put almost 300 million baht aside ...

Retired engineer worth 239 million £6 million maybe in is dream if he work abroad he never have earn at much or maybe he invested is money ?

Very easy for an 'Engineer' here to have a lot of dosh, especially if he is in charge of signing off huge Infrastruture Projects or even Road Building, as the bulk of such jobs are 'signed off' upon reciept of thick brown envelopes.

If a "wealthy retired engineer" in a third-world country like Thailand has put almost 10 million US$ aside that - even more importantly - he willingly dispenses as soon as favors for some bigwig names are brought into play, leads me to believe that said "wealthy retired engineer" may not always have been oh so kosher himself and in his day probably has relied on requesting more than a few "favors" himself. At least he seems to be very, very familiar with the "favor" mechanics that make all too many people in this country "unusually wealthy". 

The whole nation is rotten to the core.

Waist high????

This country is up to it's neck in corruption.... kick-backs and pay-offs for positions at every level and agency, even at the top of the tree... millions of baht exchanges hands [far greater than the salary involved could ever accumulate] where does this wealth come from I wonder?

One day corruption always brings down a country... the clock is ticking for this cancer to purge Thailand once and for-all!

I don't usually blame the victim, but if this is true, for this reason alone he deserves to lose all his money. Anyone who wants to gift 100 million baht to the watchman is either insane or, more likely, morally bankrupt.

He was corrupt and the fact that other people currently in office may or may not be equally or more corrupt doesn't absolve him from blame.
