I wouldn't stand up either if my country where a joke to the rest of the world...

I'm a Brit and I think the US is the best country there is, as long as the Dems are kept out of power. They're all US haters as proven by this couple of clowns in the picture.

  • Not a joke in my opinion. It is the greatest country in the world when it comes to economic opportunity. There is no pathway to freedom better than wealth. Whine about the social justice warrior cause

  • Trump this, Trump that. Blah blah blah. Change the record.

  • they see themselves as royalty, they should show more gratitude to the nation that has given them everything... anyway, they and their supporters are a lost cause.

Of course they and anyone has the legal right to not stand. Heck, they can even burn the flag if they want.

If I had my way it would be a jailable, treasonous offence.

I don't know if it's a generational thing, but I think all people of my age (75), including expats, would be proud to stand for their anthem/flag regardless of who holds power. Too many fifth columnists in the US who seem to hate the country that's given them everything. The UK and Europe are similar.

a bit like every time you already paid and want to see a movie ...

Of course in Thailand when at the movies I stand up at the beginning, even though I disagree with such "forced" behavior.  But again, not a big deal and certainly not worth getting in trouble for.  The custom and "rules" were known, and if one didn't like it, one shouldn't go there.

And here is the difference, where one ppl are legally forced and the other represents honor.

Those clown in the photo are people w/o any honor.

If it's that bad how come so many are desperate to get into it?

I googled "United States Flag Code" and found they left out that it needs a good deep-cleaning every once in a while...

They do not stand for the same reason that Colin K doesn't. They have said so in the past.

Really?

Can you share a link?

Then they should have knelt to be clear it was about a protest.

It was Demi Lovato singing. Understandable misjudgement.

If they were poor, they'd of been standing.

America: We're Number 1.

Is there a law you have to stand up?

I’m sure when they visited Thailand they stood up during the national anthem. Even though Thailand is waaaay more racist and xenophobic than the USA.

They've been big Kap supporters. I say, good on em.

Jimmy G has shown what an utter failure Kap was as an elite level player.   Went from serial cellar dwellers to within a couple of minutes of winning LIV, with 80% of the same players. Kap knew he would never leave any kind of football legacy, so makes a name by embarrassing himself and not standing instead.

How has the Nation, almost always something that describes the country and the people ruling it, given them everything?

I must be totally wasted, because I was under the impression they earned their bucks from ticket sales and their hard work as well as creativity.

The flag’s been over molested by Trump. Stained and soiled goods.

The Flag is a symbol of the United States of America and not of a man. I have never seen the image of any President flying in place of the Stars and Stripes. The only stained and soiled goods is you attempt to mix the Presidency and this irrelevant issue.

Agreed the Trumpers will be along to froth and condemn soon whilst polishing their Glocks and talking about the Constitution. Go Girl Go ! It's not a free country if you can't disrespect the flag. At one time these impertinent upstarts had the temerity to disrespect the King whilst keeping Beyonce and Jay Z's ancestors in chains.

God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh.

Interesting. Try that in some countries and you'd likely get a kicking. Even if rich and with bodyguards.

No one forces them to stay in the US. They're wealthy enough to go and live somewhere else.

Slavery was a blot on humanity. and not just the US, but around the world. Modern day slavery still exists. But, wonder, had their ancestors not been kidnapped and enslaved  but remained in Africa, what their lives would be like today?

Ignorance and disrespect, to make what IMO, they see as a "fashionable" statement.

Had their ancestors remained in Africa, do you think they would have been very rich entertainers now?

So, now you are trying to say that America is the white mans land? Sounds to me you have been taking to many punches to the head. ????

There is no reason to bring racist innuendo into this.

What racist innuendo? Black boots refers to intolerance on the part of the couple. As in nazi-boots. If anything, the racist shoe is on the other foot.

should stand and face the flag, if there is one.

..."should" is a conjunctive mood, "must" would be legally binding. So what??

It does not really bother me.  I was raised Joe Boy scout, Eagle scout, ex Air Force, etc. and for decades did all the "customs".   But I don't see the need to stand just because somebody, a few decades ago thought it would be a good custom to follow.  Once I left the military, there are not many things I stand up for unless I have a great personal reason, maybe some exceptional or noteworthy person.  Of course a Judge when I am in a court room or on jury duty.  I personally disagree with that, but I am not willing to get handed a contempt charge.  I think it is ego to expect somebody to stand for them.

As for the history of standing and the national anthem being played, looks like it started in 1918 at a world series game.  WW 1 veterans being honored and so forth.  A fine idea.  But I don't see the need and I object to peer pressure.  While rare, peer pressure and threats can lead to things.  Not trying to compare this to Nazi Germany or any other country that has enforced behavior and customs, but I do.

A few years ago I was at Balboa Park sitting down and watching a cultural festival at the chinese pavilion house international cottage.  They opened with the national anthem and as an experiment and because I was tired I did not stand.  I noticed a few other people looking around that were near me, and two families with kids also did not stand.  No doubt there were many foreigners and tourists there and no doubt some of them had little idea why people were standing or what the song was.

Of course in Thailand when at the movies I stand up at the beginning, even though I disagree with such "forced" behavior.  But again, not a big deal and certainly not worth getting in trouble for.  The custom and "rules" were known, and if one didn't like it, one shouldn't go there.

My late mum used to regale me with tales of playing the British National Anthem at the end of a movie in the cinema and there was a gadarene rush to get out of the movie before the credits ended so they wouldn't have to stand. Free people in confident nations with self-respect don't feel the need to wrap themselves needlessly in the flag and nationalism to be proud of their country.

I don't see any intolerance on their part. I see from you a transparent and untoward attempt to racialize this issue. We don't even know as yet if this was some kind of protest either. As I said before, if it was a protest, I think being the public figures that they are, they should have at least explicitly explained that. For all we know they just were so absorbed with each other that they spaced out. Or something else.

Cheers.

Many native Americans probably have a very different view of nationhood than white citizens of European descent as do African Americans something a lot of entitled white citizens might do well to remember. The fact that you imply they should move somewhere else tells me what your concept of freedom is. And who are the triggered snowflakes now ? Somebody didn't stand for the anthem and you are sobbing all the way to your MAGA rallies. Grow a pair and move on ....

p.s it is not some other country but the US Land of the Free !

Absolutely! Beyonce and Jay-Z are just what they are, and always have been, and always will be...disgusting!!!

Death penalty?

All the others please note, it is a piece of cloth, stitched, printed, dyed whatever. CLOTH - nothing more.
Not everyone NOT standing up, NOT saluting, NOT doing-whatever is a NON-patriot. You also do not have to appear in church while still being a believer in the faith.

No other problems, it seems .................

One Confused but thankfully not American here.... is it really that important

Yes, and thank you for being whatever you are, and  not being American.

Nationalism has very few benefits but comes with huge drawbacks if we look at the 20th century.

I personally don't like the flag of my country as it doesn't represent me nor do I particularly like the national anthem. But it's a free country so I can still stay there. I never chose it. I was just born there. Much as these nationalistic U.S. citizens posting here about the respect you owe to a piece of fabric were just accidentally born in that particular country.
