Thailand misses good opportunity to show its humanity

 

 

Thailand has thrown away a very good opportunity, amidst all the crises, to demonstrate to the world that the country has humanity, said Assistant Professor Piti Srisaengnam, a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of Chulalongkorn University.

 

Writing on Facebook today, he described the Thai government’s decision not to allow a cruise ship to dock at Laem Chabang deep-sea port in Chon Buri province as “cruel and inhumane”, after the ship had already been turned away from the Philippines, Japan and Guam.

 

 

“Just try to imagine how desperate the people on board are, after the ship has been at sea for more than 20 days” he said.

 

The professor said that the Government could have allowed the ship to dock and then quarantined the over 2,000 passengers and crew at the Royal Thai Navy’s base, where Thai health officials could screen them and observe their condition.

Nope, they've showed their humanity and it's somewhat lacking.

Do they the capacity to quarantine and monitor the passengers?

Not allowing them to leave the ship in a port, is as awful them being sent back to sea. Seems like a no win situation.

Where was the ship from?

Any diagnosed cases on board?

 

The government could perhaps rationalize this decision if it had followed other countries in closing the borders to people who may have been exposed to the virus (e.g. visitors from China). In the absence of this, I agree with Assistant Professor Piti. It's good to see someone speaking up on the issue.

The vessel could have been quarantined at sea as the Japanese did. IMO, Thailand just doesn't want the optics of such an event.

 

To those criticizing Thailand, the quarantined japanese vessel now has 135+ infected occupants. There  had been no indication of illness at the start.

From what I read earlier, not only are there no diagnosed cases but there's no reports of any illness on the ship at all

 

I have to wonder if the problem is the owner of the ship - it's the same company that owns the ship in Japan that does have a load of cases on board.

 

Of course if it turns out that there are infected people on board then they would all be reported as new Thailand cases....now what's the problem again?

They obviously didn’t pay up

I bet if anyone scrolled back through tvf they would find a thread absolutely slatng the Government for letting cruise ships land in Samui. Here we have the Thai Government stopping a cruise ship, like a number of other countries have and the 1st 4 replies are slating the Government for not letting them into port. What can the Government do? They have offered food, medicine and supplirs.

 

Sinple fact is that Thailand needs its medics, resources and doctors focused on those in Thailand. Not on a ship, who obviously will claim no infections. Its easy to see the time, momey and resources the Japanese are spending on their cruise ship with patients, why dont the cruise go back to HK their port of origin.

I think you missed the part where they say there are no ill people on board the ship. None at all. It was mentioned in another thread earlier in the day.

Yes the one in Japan said similar or they had 2 people ill. Now 130 odd and counting.

Well they should have no problem docking in their original leaving port or where they planned to go then.... why have Japan turned them away, presumably Hong Kong to.....Philipines.... Guam....

 

Literally this Government could never make a correcr decision according to some on here...

There does appear to be some element of mystery behind this case, obviously we're not being told everything.

2000 passengers plus the crew another 1000 let's say maybe Thailand dont have the resources to cope with that, I think the boat should never set sail in the first place

Not worth any risk at all. They did the right thing. As for this,

They could be in much worse places on Earth. I am sure they will be okay on a luxury cruise liner. 

 

I'm surprised they didn't send Thai insurance brokers onto the ship to pitch 40K outpatient coverage for 40K baht annual premium...a no lose for the carriers

Daft thing is, that if the ship docks somewhere soon, all the people on it can quite freely fly into a Thai airport without an issue !

cha cha could have put the international community to shame, staging a media coup upstaging Trump and Xi.   Thailand could have directed the vessel to a port and rendered aid.  He acted like other great nations, poorly and cowardly.

After the tsunami they collected money for the victims on dutch tv for a long time...they got a huge amount which was donated to the involved countries like thailand....

They could have ordered holland to send an empty plane, let the cruise dock, all guests in the bus, drive it straight to the plane, push them in the plane and wave goodbye....

Thought not!

Anyone recalls terrible floods in Burma where thousands were killed? Thailand donated 1 million baht.

 

australian fires, Thailand did absolutely nothing .

 

when tsunami hit, Thailand got millions if not billions of dollars in aid.

 

they love to take , just not so good at giving 

In the mean time everyday 100000 people come in on BK airport. +/- 5000/h

They cant handle a ship with 2000 persons

Did you really think there is a Ship full of Lepers from China arriving?

 

 

In all fairness, WHO should step up and provide the resources to come to the aid of this ship. WHO drop the ball not Thailand.

ONE plane and ONE bus for 3000 passengers and crew. I think not!

Then so must that of Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines who all previously denied docking to this ship.
