Bangkok air quality improves

The air quality levels in Bangkok have improved to safe levels, according to data seen on Thursday (February 13).

 

The levels of PM2.5 dust (particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter) in several districts of Bangkok and nearby provinces were in the safe zone, according to the results from 57 air-quality monitoring stations at 7am on Thursday.

 

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) said dust particle levels were in the range between 17 to 41mcg per cubic metre while the international and Thai safety standards are set at 25mcg per cubic metre and 50mcg per cubic metre respectively.

 

However, other provinces in Thailand like Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Rai, Loei, Phrae and Mae Hong Son still face unhealthy smog, with dust levels at between 60-70mcg per cubic metre.

Now its only at the level that would be considered a code orange public health crisis in almost any other country rather than a code purple.... not much to celebrate.

It will be horrible again when the wind stops blowing.

 

I had a young lady waitress in Chaing Mai suggest that I wear a mask due smoke and “take care of myself”.

I suggested to her that since she is Thai that she and other Thais need to take care of Thailand and STOP the smoke...

 

She said “too big of problem”

I suggested she take to the streets with her friends and rally to bring awareness..

”Too big a problem”...

 

Unless the Thais demand change, nothing will change.

Yes, they control the amount of burning that takes place.  50% of sugar cane is allowed to be burnt and processed

Unfortunately, the current respite has absolutely nothing to do with anything the Thai government has done to improve local air quality...because by and large...they haven't done ANYTHING of any consequence.

 

It's a weather driven respite, and most likely, we'll have more bouts of bad air in BKK later in Feb. before things finally close out the very bad part of the annual smog season.

 

Even if its better today, it will be the same next year. Drastic action is required, even if it entails pain.
