The emergency decree, currently in effect in Thailand’s three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat and certain districts of Songkhla province, is to be extendeduntil June 19th.

The Committee for the Management of Emergency Situations, led by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, today endorsed the proposal from the Fourth Region’s Internal Security Operations Command for the extension.

Assistant spokesman for General Prawit, Maj-Gen Patkhasak Patirooppanon, said the committee also approved a proposal for the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to tighten up the registration of SIM cards, both pre and post-paid, to assist in the investigation of violent incidents. Lists of the registered buyers of SIM cards will be submitted to the 9th Provincial Police Bureau by mobile phone service providers.

The problem is the law, if they change the "Emergency Decree" law there will be international repercussions as the government will be seen to going down the "authoritarian" route.

This decree dates back to at least the Shiniwattra era, with renal every three months for over fifteen years. Of course if a government actually took settling this dispute seriously there might be some progress, but that might involve accepting that the southern area has more in common with Malaysia than Thailand culturally and religiously.
