webfact Posted February 18, 2020 Share Posted February 18, 2020 Hunt on for foreign thief who stole 50,000 baht from tourists at Hat Yai hostel Thai caption: Malaysian thief/Hostel in Hat Yai/Removed CCTV and fingerprints to avoid being traced by police Police in Had Yai in southern Thailand are hunting for a Malaysian thief who stole 50,000 baht from two foreign tourists. CCTV on Channel 7 showed the thief dressed in black behind a counter at a hostel on Friday. He stole 40,000 baht from a Chinese tourist who had left it for safe-keeping. Earlier he had stolen 10,000 baht from the room of a Japanese tourist where he also obtained a key card to let him into the hostel. The thief was caught wiping down surfaces to clear fingerprints. He removed the hard disk for the CCTV and one camera, reports said. The owner of the hostel named as Suwatchai compensated the tourists out of his own pocket and warned other establishments in Had Yai, Songkhla to be on the lookout for the thief. Stocky Posted February 18, 2020 Share Posted February 18, 2020 There was an incident last year with CCTV showing a couple of characters stealing a bicycle from a pub; it was an old fashioned bicycle hung on the wall as part of the decorations. The hostel owner is to be commended for putting his hand in his pocket and reimbursing the tourists, he could have just pointed to the usual small print about 'valuables stored at owner's risk'.
