Air purifier on bus roof likened to GT200 hoax

With the Transport Ministry planning to install another 3,000 air purifiers on bus roofs, Jessada Denduangboripant, a lecturer at the science faculty of Chulalongkorn University on Sunday (February 16) likened the project to the fraudulent GT200 bomb detector case several years ago. 

 

"I asked the opinion of a researcher at The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) if installing air-filter boxes on the roofs of 500 buses would help solve the air-pollution problem in Bangkok, as claimed by the BMTA," he said. For an easy comparison, the Narit official said: " it is like a single dead pixel on your phone, hardly visible". 

 

In short, it is a fraudulent tool similar to the GT200 bomb detector, but born in 2020 when people are not easily fooled” Jessada said on his personal Facebook page.

 

However, BMTA director Surachai Eamvachirasakul, on Monday (February 17) , claimed that the air purifier actually works.

 

The prototype machine, he said, sweeps air containing PM 2.5 particulate matter at an altitude of no more than 5 metres. When the bus is running, air travel along the roof and pass through the filter box in a natural process without the use of electricity. 

 

Filtering materials used in the air purifier can be purchased online at low cost, he added. 

 

The working principle of the prototype air purifier comes with the same invalid argument as the GT200 bomb detector, Jessada said.

It would be good to see some details of what is being claimed, if it apparently has flawed logic.

However, that only refers to filtering PM10, and not PM2.5. That said, the article re Bangkok buses may have nothing to do with the accompanying photograph.

Well I'm sure someone benefitted from the purchase!

Better replace those ancient old red buses, they don't belong on the roads anymore.

They not have a pic' of one of their own buses ? as the one in the article is a UK model complete even with strange " give way " road markings .. By all accounts there is some merit in this idea but it's hard to fathom how it can be effective away from the immediate roof level area of the bus when those pesky particulates get everywhere ..

You forgot to add the most obvious detail showing the bus is from England.  Written near the roof, at the back end there is, "a breath of fresh air for Southampton".

I think the rookie who provided the photo forgot to tell the other rookie who wrote the article that they must always write at the end of it the source of the photo and the name of the photograph if it is not a personal one  .

As often as Thais restock the toilet paper and paper towels in their public bathrooms!  

I am so embarrassed and humiliated that this nonsense was adopted in the town of my childhood – Southampton.

 

Even if I were still the spotty youth I once was, I would be mortified that this utter rubbish was given the green light in my home town.

 

If only Thailand could pick up on proper technology and advancement from other cities and countries rather than the most stupid and cruddish ideas.
