US Army exposed as Ukrainian drones dominate war exercise

A drone-heavy US Army exercise in Germany has exposed the brutal realities of modern warfare, with Ukrainian forces using aerial surveillance to repeatedly detect American troops and destroy simulated vehicles. But the commander at the centre of the drill says the lessons were more complicated than simply declaring heavy armour obsolete.

Ukrainian drones put US tactics under pressure

Blackhawk Company of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment spent 10 days training across a 14-by-27-kilometre range at Hohenfels, with Ukrainian personnel supporting opposing forces.

The Americans lacked some of the counter-drone equipment they would have preferred. Instead, troops were forced to adapt — moving Bradley vehicles under dense vegetation, exploiting difficult terrain and changing routines to make detection harder.

Despite those measures, simulated combat saw Bradley fighting vehicles and tanks destroyed, with some crews also counted as casualties.

The battlefield changed — and so did the Americans

Capt Allan Watson rejected the suggestion that the losses proved armoured formations had become irrelevant. He argued that vehicles still provide vital protection and mobility, but acknowledged that units must change how they operate when drones can maintain persistent surveillance.

The Ukrainian 412th Regiment demonstrated how relatively inexpensive drones could observe American movements and feed information rapidly into the wider battlefield. Watson said the Ukrainians delivered a “masterclass” in sensor-to-shooter coordination and speed.

By the sixth day, Blackhawk had shifted from defensive operations to attacking, while Ukrainian forces later worked alongside the Americans. Watson said his soldiers became increasingly confident as they adapted to the unfamiliar conditions.

A warning Washington cannot ignore

The exercise was not an isolated shock. Ukrainian drone teams have previously caught US forces off guard during training in Germany, with one exercise forcing defeated American units to re-enter the scenario.

The purpose of such drills is to expose weaknesses before they appear on a real battlefield. Ukraine’s experience fighting Russia has made its forces highly proficient in drones and electronic warfare — giving US troops a valuable, if uncomfortable, training partner.

The message is stark: drones have not necessarily replaced tanks. But armies that fail to adapt to the drone-dominated battlefield risk seeing their most expensive equipment exposed before they can even fight back.

A drone-heavy US Army exercise exposed serious vulnerabilities

So basically the US army seen how good drones are,and also Ukraine is

having success with them against Russia a much bigger force ,they are

cheap ,can take out targets with a much greater value, but the Americans

have decided to disband a drone unit in Germany ,

Why would they do that ? ,I know Americans always think bigger is better,

to have battleships ,big tanks, multi million $ missiles ,and the

military suppliers of this equipment must be supported , because they

have lobbyist's pushing their narrative,

Now..........remind me.............haven't two US brothers have recently invested heavily in drone design and production.......can't remember their names.

Politicians in hock to the manufacturers of expensive ‘last war’ equipment.

There’s little profit in a drone that can be bought online from Shopee.
