Hello,

if I leave the country for 6 month on a 1 year visa extension do I have to carry my work permit with me or will a copy be enough?

My emploee said they have to keep the work permit if the labour department is going to check their office.

If you have a work permit, read the warning on the inside of the back cover. (Page 31 in mine.)

You must have it on you or on the premises during working hours. I assume that means the hours you are actually working, and not when you are not there.
