University, high school students rise up for democracy

Students at several universities and a Bangkok high school were on Thursday (February 27) continuing protests that began on Monday over the government’s perceived undermining of the Constitution, which they blame for the pro-democracy Future Forward Party’s dissolution.

At Silapakorn University in the capital, students gathered in the courtyard with signs echoing elements of this week’s censure debate in Parliament, such as government spending on “information operations”.

At Burapha University in Chonburi, 1,000 students called for full freedom after years of civil rights being politically suppressed and demanded to know why the national budget earmarks more money for defence than education.

Burapha instructor Olarn Thinbangtieo said students have suffered political suppression since the coup in 2014 and want to see improvements in Thailand.

The current student movement was non-violent and respected the law, he said, characterising it as “only a symbolic expression” of opinion.

At Srinakharinwirot University, also in Bangkok, students discussed freedom of speech and the fact that eight political parties have been disbanded since 2006.

The parties are institutions that reflect the Constitution and allow citizens to participate in politics through their chosen representatives, it was agreed.

Administrators of Satriwithaya School in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district barred students from holding further political gatherings on the grounds, so the youngster instead took their signs decrying “dictatorship” to the Democracy Monument.

One of the group’s leaders said they represent the new generation, which supports democracy, and do not want their political views suppressed.

The last two younger people I spoke to were clearly very angry. The first one was back in January who was talking about issues that people wouldn't have been talking about 5 years ago in public. He seemed genuinely p***** off. He was 15 years old.

The second one was a med student who was asking me about how to hide his IP address. At first he said it was because many useful websites for studying were blocked at his campus. I gave some simple and free suggestions on how to easily view blocked content, but then he said he wanted to leave messages on social media without being tracked. I knew what he was getting at and then he just fired a tirade of abuse towards the rich and powerful here. I told him some good VPNs and advised him to be very careful.

It really is great seeing people (young or old) speaking out.

I've been saying for years that it will take the students, who are a thousand times more aware than their parents, to finally wake up and say "Enough is Enough!" before things finally change.  Maybe that day is coming.

Mad as He... ll and aint gonna take it anymore. As Colinneil said: Go Kids Go! I'm proud of my 3 kids as well.

The uni kids are not old enough to know how to be subservient, like their parents have for many years.

They are better educated than most of their parents, and can see what is becoming of their country, being controlled by a group of power mad old soldiers.

Hopefully this is the start of something very BIG, to drive those geriatrics out.

Interesting to see ole Stevens spin on this, as he reckons everybody loves his idol.

There might be a reason for this:

And that's the least offensive of them.

About the bloody time. I doubt they'll be able to crack it though, junta will simply turn to it's commie buddies from China for advice on how to push the entire nation into quiet subservience.

Not all brainwashed sheep then even thought they went through the Thai education system, proud of them but they will be accused of disloyalty, creating confusion and ultimately a threat to national security by the clowns in charge.

Shouldnt this be demanded during the current censure debate as well?

As one poster said John McEnroe asked a tennis official to read between the lines.

The debating chamber is irrelevant.

The future of Thailand is not going to be decided there.

There was never any chance that it would be.

The dissolution of FF had to happen in order for this to happen.

This has to happen in order for...............

I applaud the action of these students, who recognise that there is no democracy in Thailand only rhetoric and repression by the military! They will have carefully considered both sides of the argument and made their decisions based on what they can see and feel.  This is in complete contrast to the PM and his regime who can only see through one eye, which appears to be blind!  In most countries, young people are seen as the future and their ideas cherished. Someone once said that students throughout the ages are there to challenge establishments.  That is how science and arts and politics have progressed throughout generations. Go for it students, stand up for your beliefs and you will ultimately succeed!

In Thailand Officer Sumnut usually turns up to show the students what he thinks of the students idea of democracy by blowing holes in their heads.

It would be interesting to see if the students are bold enough and mean what they are protesting for if they all walked out of the Universities and High Schools and not return until there is a change in the government/

This topic is important, must be seen and followed.

It is already dropping down the rankings to page 2 as no less than 16 virus postings are now above it, as I write.  The excessive number of new post topics about the virus also suffocated interest in the FFP ruling very quickly not long ago.

Must be a real dilemma for the junta, which to keep from the foreground, corona or uprising. They can always try to swamp us with honest cabbie stories and TAT stats.

Combined with a general strike (sorry can't avoid the pun) or self quarantine until the virus is gone? That would avoid being a target and probably a very effective way to handle it.

It is good they understand where politics is going. I ask many of their parents who they vote for and WHY?  None have any reasonable answer.

Oh dear. This won't end well.

It's very condescending and daft to say that older people don't know who or what they're voting for. Older people started out as young people, then got lots of life experience with which to make informed decisions.

I voted for Prayuth.

It won't end well for who? The ones asking for democracy or the small % forcing dictatorship on the majority?

You voted for a man who is allowing a convicted heroin-smugger to be a minister? Why?

Oh come off it. Show me a clean politician anywhere in the world. In the west, politicians are supporting drug legalisation! Have you ever wondered why?

There are many rotten politicians the world over. But at the end of day, if you can't prove their guilt in a crime, you can't do anything about it. But normally their reputation will precede them and no one one will touch them. It's not what you know - it's what you can prove.

Now, show me an example of where a politician has been proven to be a criminal (murder, drugs, rape, etc.) and they kept their job - do you have one? The agricultural minster was sentenced to prison for dealing heroin. A crime punishable by death in Thailand. Prayut knows this and is keeping him on.

There was a general election. Prayuth won it. Why does the liberal left always try to ignore democracy when their preferred party loses?

At least in Thailand, the parties are different, unlike in the west where most of them are identical liberal left globalist clones. Is that what you call 'democracy'?
