Phuket bars, clubs closed for 14 days over COVID-19 fears

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana has given the order for all entertainment venues in Phuket, including bars, to close for 14 days.

Article and Gov clear as mud as usual. The decree as written in Bangkok said venues with over 50 patrons- as in Pattaya local rules seem to be dominating instead.

On the other hand the article said '300 establishments' so maybe it is just the bigger places.

Wait and see, I'm sure there will be 10 pages of indignation and armchair expurts unaffected by this lurking in the wings.

Phuket Fantasea, Siam Niramit are some of the biggest draws on the island. Showing open tonight for shows. Phuket had direct flights two months ago from Wuhan, but cases were minimal. Now taking large restrictions, are cases being underreported or is this an attempt to eliminate the virus thru limited contact?

Don't worry. All who can afford it will stay open.

"Owners of venues can file a request directly to the Phuket Governor’s Office to be considered whether their venues should be closed or not, he noted.

“However, they must have good reasons to support the consideration under the Communicable Disease Act, B.E. 2558 (2015),” he added."

I think the key words are 'support the consideration'. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean.

Just curious is anything still open in Patong?

Here in Kata in bar street everything was closed last night, except one large bar (they have big food menu so they are probably a "restaurant" now), as well as nearby small bar (they always had food menu in front, so another "restaurant" ;-)), both places were completely full with quiet music on, they will have very good business in next weeks...

Massage shops were also closed (saw two of them still having few costumers inside, lights were off, lol)...

Our favorite restaurant was ordered to cancel live band (quiet & slow jazzy music, but still...).

Forgot to add: hotel disco in Club-Med hotel/fortress was up and running, full of people (hotel guests only, I guess) with loud music blasting, heard it from afar.

cops were out last night and visiting every restaurant and anyone that had customers drinking ONLY (ie not eating or ordering food) the owner was fined and forced to close down.

Personally dont see the dif between a bar or a restaurant if both have lots of people.

do as ny, la, SF and many other cities have done  an shut them all down

Don't worry about club med. It will close later this month for 2 months.

Social distance in a restaurant is a lot bigger than in a bar or club.

Correct, and its easier to manage distancing in a restaurant versus a bar. In the US, every establishment has a maximum legal occupancy determined by the local fire marshal. In many cities, this maximum occupancy is now being cut in half by local authorities, and restaurant owners are complying by removing tables to give more space between customers. Can't really do that in a bar or club.

No  "cases' because no one was testing for the infection and government did not want there to be any cases. There is under reporting because  the testing activity is minimal. The virus cannot be "eliminated" thru limited contact. The  goal of social distancing is to limit the spread, to slow the progress to allow the health system to  respond to the critical care cases. Because Thailand was slow to respond,  the infections  from 2 weeks ago will continue. Maybe some infections will be prevented. However, until all  bars and restaurants are closed, the effort is ineffective. People won't get it until the bodies pile up.
