The National Office of Buddhism has ordered all temples to refrain from organising the Songkran festival and religious ceremonies due to the Covid-19 crisis, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, Tewan Liptapanlop, said on Saturday (April 11).

He made his remarks while handing out surgical face masks and hand gels to merchants and people at various markets in Nakhon Ratchasima province, and asked them to take care of their health by wearing face mask and washing their hands regularly.

“As I have the duty to supervise the National Office of Buddhism, I feel worried about monks who go out for alms and people who go to make merit in temples that they face the risk of infection,” he said.

He said the National Office of Buddhism under the government had ordered all temples to refrain from organising religious ceremonies, including the Songkran festival, to contain the spread of Covid-19 virus.

“Meanwhile, many temples may lack essentials. Therefore, I will discuss with the Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on ways and measures to help monks, expecting to have a solution soon,” he said.

He believed that people nationwide would understand why they have to order all temples to refrain from organising religious ceremonies.

It's a very profitable time for the rogues in robes

No chance of them turning down cash and other booty

Where else can the populace go to ask their deities, gods or whatever for help in these extremely testing times?

Surely controls could be put in place?

The monks are fine, he ought to be worrying about millions of Thais who are literally penniless.

He's going to have a very big problem on his hands if he doesn't assist those people real quick

all places of worship are closed in the uk but the religious leaders are being very effective in using technology to deliver support to the people. religious organisations are also organising themselves to deliver practical help to those less well off. all it needs is some imagination and a 'can do' attitude.

Help for the Temples ? ? They are rolling in money.

Songkran is one of their big money makers, not likely.

All places of worship are closed in the US also.  Most now doing their services via internet.

As the leaders of the world strike a blow for atheism and successfully shut down worship globally.   They have destroyed the economic underpinnings supporting the cultural underpinnings supporting the religious underpinning of society.  And all in less then two months, and with all the 'religious leaders' on board.
Ordo Ab Chao.  Mission accomplished!
