So the drain on the budget wasn’t just short term. things going well, these people will be going back to work. So for those grandkids you are talking about, for starters they’d probably be grateful that their grandparents were still around for a long while cause the government has the foresight to encourage people to stay home without fear of being bankrupt, and set things up so the economy could at least bounce back from this as quickly as possible given business didn’t wither on the vine. As for paying for all of this? Probably much needed tax reform which Australian governments have shirked for the best part of 20 years. Oh and a 1% levy on all iron ore and coal exports, which mainly go to China... Edited April 18, 2020 by samran 1

I don't think the ones on Newstart ( or whatever it is called now ) would agree with you. They've been treated like criminals for years by Centrelink, and the stimulus has only enabled them to catch up with what OAP and DSP recipients have been getting for a long time. You're right in saying the economy is screwed. Debt has to be repaid, and the best way to do that is winding back negative gearing and franking credits, two of the biggest tax rorts, taxing multinationals on revenue instead of income, and ensuring Australian iron ore, coal and natural gas are no longer free gifts to the companies extracting them. Get set for an ideological battle.

I doubt things will change in the corridors of power, no matter how much we wish they would. I'm naturally pessimistic but I've rarely been disappointed in expecting the worst outcomes for the ordinary bloke at the bottom of the pile, and I include myself in that demographic. Get set for an ideological battle. The newstart is now called "jobseeker". The payments for folks who lost jobs due to the virus are referred to as "jobkeeper". Both are getting reasonable benefits, with a lot of the restrictions and waiting periods eased. But Yes, you make some excellent points there. Aus gov. treated the unemployed like sหit for years, but now that the unemployed represent a higher % of the voting pool.. guess what? They will be throwing money at them like confetti. And interestingly enough, you have the Aussie bogans on FB calling people "dole bludgers" for getting benefits.. These f'ing morons are not smart enough to realise that all that money goes straight back into the Australian economy. Its not as if the "bludgers" are off buying yaughts for their holiday homes in the south of France. The so called bludgers are most likely to be the customers who are supporting these bogans jobs and businesses. As for your other good suggestions, it sounds like you are hinting at hitting up the rich? Its a grand idea, but while the politicians are in bed with big business and many are even rich themselves (remember Malcom Turnbull) they will look after their own, hence i fear its just more of same...pigs in the trough.

Seems crazy to me to ban activity that can be carried out without any interaction like tending golf course and bowling club greens. Not even allowed to fish off the beach if apart. Many such examples, but you get the idea. Such draconian measures only encourage some to break the rules, IMO, and they are. I understand the economic relief only lasts 12 weeks, so they have to make significant changes by then, IMO. As an aside, the government was fairly hammering farmers before this happened. Seems that they may be the only thing standing between us and disaster now. How times change!

He's probably the most socially conservative PM Australia has had for a long while and a happy clappy on top of that. Having said that, I've got nothing by praise on how he has handled all of this.

Going to the beach is banned mainly (apparently you can go swim out and the come back in so long as you don't then loiter). Golf is allowed in some states but not others. I was listening to the PM the other day and he summed it up pretty well, you just have to keep the rules simple on what you can do, and for the rest assume you are infected so you don't do them. Common sense stuff. The strictness comes down to this - and we see it here. There are the idiots who simply take the p!ss (eg Bondi beach a few weeks back), and then your societal pendants. If there is a loophole they will find it and try and prove their point just to be a pain. I personally think they are mentally ill. And we all know the type... The upside is you want to do this shutdown once and only once, and I suspect Australia and NZ will be able to achieve that.
