Eighty year old Frenchman pays 50,000 bail for flouting Pattaya beach regulations

Featured Replies

He's luckly he wasn't arrested in France otherwise he would be looking at a 131,000 baht fine + 6 months prison

will also face harsher penalties, ranging from 135 to 3,700 euros ($3,960) and a six-month prison term for repeat breaches

Poor woman. The experience aged her 6 years in the course of an evening.

Ssshhhhh She just lost a year in support from the french man. Who can blame her?   It"s the first report we see about foreigner had to pay 50,000 - this will make magic for future tourism.

What is that old saying... If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. He did the crime, he got caught, he must now face the consequences.

According to some on here, he was a repeat offender, the b.i.b. had already asked them to move on, they did and then came back when they thought the coast was clear. Silly old fool deserves all gets.

To show how stupid he is, he (or his Mrs.) paid some bloke 50k, who said he was a bail bondsman, too expedite matters. Yet he said that they would not get the 50k back, so it could not have been bail, they were told that they would still have to have their day in court, where he faces being fined or imprisoned, so he has not been fined either.

They paid some conman 50k for nothing, that was their decision, trying to get away with what they did.

Remember this, it is <deleted> like this that will keep the restrictions in place for longer and their selfish behaviour will spoil it for us all.

The man was with several elderly French and Belgian friends - all residents of Pattaya - hanging around at the beach at 5pm as was their custom.

How about the rest of the old fellas? Did they only single out the French guy?

what happened to the guy who said he was in the mafia?

He mentioned your name, they waied him and he was let go.

Flouting the law and not only that started arguing with the BIB instead of just moving on, no sympathy from me.

That was Mac The Knife wasn’t it?!

There is a big sign with the consequences. Or do you expect the laws especially here in Thailand are not valid for foreigners? Is it like this in your home country?

Well, mostly ALL the times, it looks like the law (at least the punishment) are valid ONLY for foreigners...!

After a lifetime avoiding such matters, therefore not an expert, the 50,000 wasn't a fine,

but bail, which I believe is paid by a suspect as a bond to ensure that he turns up in

court on the appointed date to face sentencing.

I may well be wrong......

And the explanation for refusing to issue an receipt for the 50K is...?

Ok just to clarify it for you.

https://www.france24.com/en/20200318-france-coronavirus-lockdown-violation-attestation-epidemic-christophe-castaner-public-health

So they started at 35 euro fine they increase to 135 and up to 300 something for repeat violations.

The difference in France was, like in many other proper countries (not lawless la la land), they mostly fined people for not having the declaration written.

There is no such thing as prison for walking on the street.

So i appreciate you want to make it sound like 131,000 baht and prison, but in fact it was 5,000 baht and no prison, in a country where wages are much higher.

Oh, and no such thing as an arrest, taken to police station to be extorted. You are issued a paper that you can pay in a number of days or contest if you wish to do so, so let us not compare.

Absolute disgraceful bar stewards!

80 years old should have been sent on his way with a warning for standing near the beach with friends.

Ripped for 50k by a bail guy, a future court date and and passport retained.

Ripped by the escort home just extortion at its finest.

Have they no common sense or shame? ..... guess the redundant jet ski scam is leaving empty coffers that need replenishing!

One for the international press I think to see Thailands finest at work!!

Rubbish, those guys hang around there flouting all the rules of sicial distancing, no mask andprobably drinking beer. They wete always there every night. Deport the ignorant &$#@##$

I completely agree. They're making a Thai person who broke the curfew, which is surely a much more serious offence than hanging around the beach, recite the Thai national anthem and that's his punishment. Meanwhile an aged farang was probably frightened half to death by the police treatment and extorted several times by both cops and civilians. Disgraceful behaviour on the part of the RTP, but sadly there will be no comeback.

If he was on the beach with friends, why weren't they fined too?

Ah then he would have been quids in flouting the law at home.

Even though its years since he earned a wage.

No point in putting those signs up if they are not enforced, but for thais as well as farangs please !

They started at 135 euros fine and increased it to 3,700 euros as some many people were ignoring the lockdown rules

3,700 euros is approx 131,000 baht and  potential 6 month prison sentence

things have changed since the date of your link March 18th

Yeah it's 500b for Thais but only if they have that amount. If not 100b will do.

When the income isnt as good as it was. Understand that police has expensive livingstyles. And income has been bad a long time now.

The notice on the beach clearly states offenders "could face 1 year imprisonment or up to 100,000 baht fine". He got off light

He STILL have to show up in court, were he can be fined ANOTHER 100K... All together 150K!
You STILL think he "got off light"...???

https://www.thelocal.fr/20200324/what-happens-if-you-break-the-coronavirus-lockdown-rules-in-france

"What began with a €38 fine for breaking the lockdown was increased to €135 the very same day.

....if you're lucky you may escape with a warning the first time.

.....

A second breach registered within 15 days of the first breach will be punished with a €200 fine.

Anyone who breaks the rules four times in 30 days risk a €3,700 fine and up to six months in prison."

And read that as suspended sentence.

And this is actually very harsh in European standards, what France has done.

Why do you assume that all Thai women have no scruples?

The sign next to them clearly states 1 year imprisonment or fine not exceeding 100,000 baht or both , so if he paid 50.000 its only half of what he could of had to pay .

But these rules dont apply to the almighty farang!

French and Belgians - think they can do as they like and find out this ain't the EU!

Wouldn't have had a problem if they'd have followed the rules. Rules for their own safety. 80 year old - not wise to risk catching C19.

If they broke the rules in France do they think the police would treat them differently?

100'000 Baht is about 2800(!) Euro.

Never near this in a country like Germany or Switzerland for such a minor offense.

x people sitting together on a greenfield might cost like 150 Euro.

Draconian show of force. Completely out of bounds and only possible in a country with such a military rule (similar might exist elsewhere, "shoot the curfew breakers" etc.).

Not a single public park in Germany totally locked,

Rules for "social distancing" and that's it.

But with a laughable police force like here they try the "big sign" method.

There is no "health" reason to fence off a beach and a beach walk.

Hard times for the Police in Pattaya no people around Farangs on Bikes so they won’t be making the same money that they usually make. Find it quite distasteful that they would do this to a 80 year old man.If it had been a Thai that would not have happened.

Not a suspended sentence according to this article

At least two people have been jailed, however, a 35-year-old man from Cavaillon, near Marseille, was jailed for two months and fined €800 after being caught outside without a certificate four times in less than a week.

UNBELIEVABLE scam.... yes, hope such news will help bring more quality tourists when this news gets out to foreign press,,,,

I wonder how much an 80 year old Thai would of been fined

No point in putting them up because no point in banning the beaches anyway.
