Crowds flock to Chatuchak weekend market on opening weekend

 

 

Daily News reported that steady streams of shoppers flocked to Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok on Sunday after the famous market opened on Saturday for the first time in months. 

 

All entrances were manned with staff taking temperatures and handing out hand sanitizer - some customers carried their own.

 

Some people who registered temperatures over 37.5C said that was because it was so hot. They were allowed to sit down for a while before being rechecked. 

 

Some carried hand sanitizer themselves. Basins for hand washing operated by the feet were in evidence. 

 

Market staff insisted that visitors wear masks as did individual shops. 

 

Restaurants had screens on tables and social distancing was practiced. 

 

Some shops advertised "sales" to encourage custom. 

 

The area of the fancy tropical fish market also did a roaring trade. 

 

Families and couples made up the bulk of the visitors.

'tropical fish market', or as it's more commonly known, the 'wet market'. 

I saw general compliance with mask wearing but social distance was non-existent. Some vendors and shoppers did not wear masks. Crowd was larger than I expected in the Pet area and food stalls. BMA needs to meet the same criteria they are placing on other venues such as limiting numbers of people. 

This is fine, but its hazardous to walk on the beach.

Well there seems to be very different news reports. This was posted in another news thread on this same forum- with most shops still shuttered and few visitors

Not a wet market where animals are slaughtered.  Pet fish market.  The owners usually kill the fish after they get the fish home by not looking after them.

What happened to social distancing???

The BMA approved the opening so rents can be requested & paid to the owners SRT.

Social distancing out the window except for "private enterprise".

So our business still stays closed where I would ensure at least 1 metre apart & also ensure no one 

who had arrived in the country in the last month allowed

The owners of this piece of property have some clout.  Enough so various public agencies devoted to protecting the public will keep their mouths shut.

The wet market in Chatujak is very clean The Thais have always paid close attention to it In China they simple do not care No cleaning NOTHING

Well why wouldn't the owners of the land have some clout, the owners of 7-11 across Bangkok have some clout as many others do in the world. And can you please provide any evidence that someone from a government authority didn't say something when they should have ?  ....  or are you just making that up also.

I was at Chatuchak after the re-open and I can say that most were observing the social distance rule when possible and all had masks on. The market was clean and especially the tropical fish sales area and the unique animal sale area. Tables in eat areas were spaced out as required and folks generally observed the safety protocol. Hand wash was available at every turn.

OK, it's not quite a wet market, but it's pretty miserable, the animals are hot, bothered & unhappy, and if you dig a little deeper, you'll find things you'll wish you hadn't, that is if you're an animal lover anyway.

This is true, however, it's not just fish there, is it, there are rare and endangered animals scurrying around tiny cages too, just take a little walk around, if you want your heart breaking ????
