I am working as a scientist counselor (Master of Science) in the field of the Geographical Information System (GIS) for the last 7 years with ESRI software. I had the opportunity to work in various countries making different GIS activities like, Meteorological station management in North Canada, Land management in China and in Switzerland, Geological prospecting in Namibia or land mines problem in Senegal. I'm use to work with different kind of GIS problematic involving human and natural environment making maps or thematic cartography. I also have some experience in teaching GIS.

As I traveled a lot, I developed a very good relationship with people. I'm self-confident and can work alone or with a team.

I am currently living in Switzerland and I would like to find a company (local or International) in Bangkok to work with and able to help me with immigration purpose. I already been in Bangkok few times as it was my transit city for China.

Hi Olivier, I think you must be realistic and understand that your chances of working in Thailand in the area of GIS/remote sensing etc is virtually zero!

Thailand has only a few companies that work within these areas, and a lot of the work is undertaken within the academic sector.

It may sound hard, but don't waste your time trying to find a job in this sector. Rather, broaden your areas of interest to cover other types of employment which you feel competent to perform.

Good luck!

Hello Simon,

Thank you for your answer. It took me few days thinking about it...

Anyway there is something I wonder to know, and of course it is not easy to answer.

Bangkok is really what I call a Big city and like all those big cities in Asia they have some big problems to solve about all kind of spatial management. So why it would be so difficult to work on this fields? There is so many work to be done.

Now, I know that in China my job was difficult because of the confidentiality of the data. They are so afraid about that, but at least we had a lot to do about land management, ecology, network management, transportation, etc. From my side, I made from regional to local scale a lot of maps for them. OK, that's a job at an official state level and maybe it is impossible for a foreigner to work in Thailand at this level. Anyway, GIS is a very powerful tool that can be used in so many different ways to help people in business or in planning in various matter, that it is hard to belive there is no work in Bangkok using this kind of high technology of spatial analysis. Life is always full of surprises and maybe I'm too optimistic!

Thank you for the warning!

Best Regards

Olivier

"3,000 Bangkok buildings may be unsafe!"

That's unbelievable.

It's look like it is time to invest in a good GIS project to strengthen local and regional planning and doing it as an integrated and comprehensive planning process that support the planning authorities in Bangkok in dealing

with complex urban and environmental challenges!

Just an idea...

Best Regards

Olivier

PS I'm ready for the challenge!
