So, they want to attract social media influencers. Does that mean they will stop going after such people for working in Thailand without a work permit? Some farangs have been threatened with deportation if they don't demonetize their online videoblog channels.

The report implies that they are going to use Chinese Social Media Influencers to promote Thailand as a travel destination.

And where did you get the nonsense about them threatening farangs with deportation for running Youtube channels?

In 10-15 years you cannot label the Chinese as tourists anymore in Thailand. They will be "Pisao and Pichai" - Big Sister and Big Brother.   I know the Chinese is a big market, and that 1 in

Whatsoever "most of the Thais feel" is of no account. The people at the top of government, and the people at the top of its agencies like TAT, have strong ethnic, family and commercial ties with China

Get ready for some serious fleecing when it opens to make back that baht

Do you think the Chinese will be fleeced by the Thais? I'd have thought it would be easier to push string uphill.

True, there is a small contribution to the grass roots of Thai society but the overall information is deceiving the public into thinking the Chinese are the saviours of all but they are not, it has been reported many times that the working class Thais want the farang back as they were the biggest contributor to the common Thai survival that consists of small shop keepers, small bar and restaurant owners etc. a fact the government continues to ignore ......!!!

An interesting piece on Chinese tourism statistics below, I seriously doubt the working class Thai's miss farang tourism much at all:

The Chinese tourists will flock to visit the most polluted city in the world. Fortunately the Covid masks are dual purpose. Welcome to the "new normal" Thailand 2.0. ????

And I don't think, generally speaking, the service providers want to learn Mandarin.

If Thailand is reliant on Chinese tourists may God help us all!

Western tourists are in fact sexobrimian migrants. They come to Thailand to find brides, engage in sex orgies and for economic advantage over their native lands. As long as Thailand is able to provide all the above three, they will come. But it is true that Thailand is becoming expensive or their native currencies are depreciating due to rampant desease and infections. People will be scared to engage in sex orgies due  the virus for a while. The bride finding component will pick up as soon as the bars are open.

Please pass on the locations of these sex orgies that you are so well informed of, not the gay ones though that you may enjoy.

Do you think the Sino-Thais who run this country, give a toss about what their serfs/slaves think?

It's quite stupid to rely on China.

As everybody sees now, China is responsible for so much problems in the world.

The problem is figures can be made to reflect what ever you want, the Chinese provide more of an income for the rich Thais who chauffeur them about and arrange where they eat & stay, much of this money going back to China - remember 0$-tourism ......!!!

Wondered when the ridiculous zero dollar tourism canard would appear--as it always does with a tourism thread.   Guess you missed the part about 1 in 10 Thais being employed by tourism.  If zero dollars stay in Thailand, how are these 1 in 10 Thais being paid?

Well the 'Commies' in nearby Viet Nam with a far larger population than Thailand and a common border with China has managed the COVID-19 pandemic pretty well - zero deaths.

10 million Chinese already have residence in Thailand . Live / work / own property .. Out of a population of 60mil ? ..  in 10-15 years Thailand will just be a satellite of China ... Cambodia already is ..

I know the Chinese is a big market, and that 1 in 4 Intl. tourist is from China - and polls will probably say that this will rise over the next years.

But that's not because there will be more Chinese tourists arriving, but the other 3 in 4 tourists (European, US, Australia) will not show up here anymore. Nobody wants to see Maya Bay Madness or Seafood Buffet Slaughter.

Let me put it this way, after years of dealing with both, I rather deal with the Chinese than the Thais. At least I know it's win-win with the Chinese, IF you are able to get them what they desire. With the Thais the pit is bottomless.

Yes of course, quite relevant point.

The fact that a large proportion ends up in the pockets of the rich is rampant capitalism at work and unfortunately 'normal' for Thailand.

But it's still true that several million Thai's get salaries from the Chinese tourism, albeit low, but it does keep food on their table.

And, there is no better example on display than right now as to how important those millions of tourism jobs are, even if the majority might be low-paying.  Low pay is better than no pay.

Your post is rather puzzling, and I suggest woefully uninformed.

The Western 'sex tourist' is actually a small percentage of the Western tourist demographic, albeit likely an important one in terms of money spent. In reality, most Western tourists come for the food, climate, beaches and culture. A small segment of them partake in the nightlife, but those who do drop a lot of baht on drinks and other 'entertainment', all of which gets circulated into the wider Thai economy.

If I were to use anecdotal evidence, I would say the highest ratio of sex tourists/visitors from Country X, I would guess Japan as #1 and South Korea as #2. In my usual hotel, the typical guest is a middle aged Japanese man who comes with golf clubs and condoms. Perhaps you haven't noticed, but Bangkok has an entire street dedicated solely to Japanese mongers (Thaniya), and bars like the Rainbow Group, Baccara, Palace in Pattaya and others are aimed at Japanese and other Asians. There is an entire subculture of karaoke joints geared toward Asian visitors.

One sees lots of Euro, American and Russian families in Thailand, their kids in tow, shopping, eating, visiting temples and Jim Thompson House, taking klong rides, etc. One sees precious few Japanese or South Korean families with kids.

Yes, my observations may be anecdotal, but if actual tourist numbers were published, I would bet on my observations.

But the reality is that tourists from China come to LOS in very big numbers and that equates to massive funds coming coming into the Thai economy from spending, accommodation, ground travel etc. Much much bigger than any other country.

Total expenditure per tourist per region is actually highest for Middle Eastern tourists, second is Australians, third is Americans, fourth is Africans, fifth is Europeans, and sixth is Chinese.

The Chinese are very cheap tourists, they don't spend a lot per head. Also they stay in Thailand for much shorter periods than Europeans, Americans, Middle Eastern or African tourists.

That's per capita. Per total expenditure by region China does edge it simply due to the large numbers of Chinese that come, however, they are only ahead by relatively little from the second region, Europe. Together Europeans and Amerians outspend the Chinese in Thailand. If you add in all the others, Australians, Middle Easterns and so on it becomes very clear that in terms of spending Thailand does not depend on the Chinese, but rather more on the various other blocs of regions that flock to Thailand for tourism.

So the focus on Chinese tourism is an ill-informed policy most likely due to the fact that 15 to 40% of Thais have Chinese ancestry. As we saw recently with the kow-towing to China by Anut, this trumps all sensible considerations.

So you think that there's no problem with US aggression in the world today? who's started all the wars in the last few decades and killed millions then? I haven't noticed China doing that, since Mao anyway, and that was his own people. OK there was Tibet which was of course out of order. Who feels the need to have military bases all over the world so that they can interfere with any country that affects their economic interests in anyway then? I'm no Chinese apologist, I just look at more than a totally bias mainstream media for my information. So are you or have you been US military by any chance???

Here's an interesting anecdote that should serve as a warning:

Many years ago, Henry Kissinger visited China and met with the then-Commerce Minister and senior Politburo member Bo Xilai (now in jail for 'corruption'). Bo had a map on his office wall that ostensibly depicted all of China. The map included not only Taiwan, but also all of Myanmar. Kissinger joked that there likely was some cartographer busy at work making an "ancient" map, soon to be discovered, that had Myanmar as an historical part, or 'renegade province' of the Middle Kingdom. Certainly the map indicated the Communist Party's territorial ambitions. Until SPDC gave up power to the NLD and ASSK, Myanmar was firmly on the road to becoming a Vassal State of China, with dammed rivers sending 100% of the power generated to China, a port in Yakhine State, ownership of most of Mandalay, control of all the mineral and timber resources of Kachin State, and oil and gas pipelines running from Yakhine to Yunnan.

It would come as no surprise if some senior Chinese official has a map on his wall currently that includes Thailand as part of the "Motherland".

Political Correctness has altered many historical names, one of which is to replace Imperialism with "Belt and Road Initiative". A rose by any other name.....
