I went to my local post office up here in Isaarn after reading on TVF that European mail was now being delivered.

It was accepted and I sent it EMS worldwide to the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, with tracking.

All went well, and I tracked it to Suvarnabhumi and then to the EMS centre in Bangkok. I left it there and thought I would check back in about 4 or 5 days.

I got a phone call yesterday from my local post office asking me to go back with my passport on Monday as the mail had been returned as they were not delivering to the Channel Islands. So it is looking like DHL or nothing.

This has been reported several times on this forum already (including by myself).  Guernsey is not a member of some postal union, so EMS-type mail can't be sent there.

You can get a refund, but it will be in a few weeks time, and not for the full amount.

If you posted from a local post office you'll need to go to the main post office in your district to recover the envelope, and later to get the refund.

I now use UPS for all my important mail to Guernsey.

The local post office or main one for our district has asked me to go there Monday with my passport for refund.

Do you recommend UPS over DHL? I will check it out today.

Yes.  In my experience slightly cheaper.  Very similar service.
