Farang Child Vacation In Isaan

Hello everyone

New to this forum from France and i must say it's very informative and often fun to read all the posts.

Here is my question: I am visting Surin in July where my wife and I have a house. I am taking along my daughter, aged 10, for the first time.

I know she will have a great time as she is already a good friend with my wife's own daughters but would you recommend any visits or activities in the province besides the elephant village?

PS: our village is Ban Khopet on the road to Ban Sawai (not sure of the English spelling)

I am looking forward to spending more time in Isaan in the future and meeting some of the Surin folks

To help her join in with local kids play, consider bringing some group play toys, frisbee, boule?

Sun screen lotion/hat would be wise.

Thanks Cuban

I had put on my agenda a Big C or Makro visit to fill up the Isuzu with some "equipment" for the kids!

(and as a French man i am a great fan of boules (pétanque))

You're welcome, depending on how long you are staying I would consider "releasing" the toys in stages, it keeps a hold on your reserves and allows for something new to appear when the frisbee has been eaten by the dog, lost in the trees or become boring.

I've not tried this yet but baseball/rounders might work if you have a larger group of kids to entertain.

Weather allowing you will probably get a few rain days, coloring books and pencils are a VERY cheap way to keep them inside and quite. If you have access to a computer with some software and pictures, make up some sheets of paper printed with B&W outline pictures of French/Thai landmark pictures, then the kids can color them in.

DVD/VDOs of cartoons work well even if not dubbed from French/Thai?

Talking of group activities, about a month or so ago the local villages round here had a "Sports Day", mostly the two day event centered on a Tug Of War contest between about 15 teams, but there was football league and various races as well. I'm pleased to say that my OH won the 100m sprint and along with her sisiter the three legged race.

Other events included kicking the tin can and throwing a boot.

I have some pictures somewhere of one of the children's events, which combined eating/drinking various things while running followed by sewwing a button on some fabric.

IMO, just let her play with the local kids.

Whatever places you want to visit - get some kids from the surrounding to go along with yours.

Thanks to all!

I am pretty much used to entertaining my child and she is looking forward to discovering the local country life.

I believe the novelty of everything she will see and the kindness of my new family and of all the villagers will make her stay a clear success!

But my point is while the Thai kids will be at schools , what type a day excursion here and there around Surin i can imagine.?

Thanks again and best to you

This is the start of some very good advice.

She might think that she can keep up with the other local kids but they are used to the sun and heat. You have to make sure she has ALOT of water and takes a rest more often.

My daughter got heat stroke and had to spend the night in the hospital last week.

Hi Frenchie..................................there is a brand new water theme park in Surin now. I have not checked it out yet, but I will later today. We were invited to the Grand Opening Ceromony, but in true Thai style the invitation arrived 15 minutes before the event. Will post a report and pin it later. Cheers.

Yes as Martin from the Farang Connection says there is the water park (just off the Buriram Road).

Your right about the local watering hole, maybe an even bigger surprise is that there is even Terry, another french guy who comes in from time to time, by himself :o

There's Phanom Rhung the ancient khmer temple ruins just outside of Buriram, maybe not so much, but educational.

How come you know it then?......................................whoops, there goes my mustard & tea-bags. :o

I meant to say "not so much FUN, but educational". No need to be so obtuse martin. After all I never mentioned you were a German. :D

Do bist a trottl

The spelling might be a bit dubious there but, hey i don't speak german, although that was austrian, which is german!!! Hmm, you can work that one out.

Anyway Frenchie, there's also the huay saneng reservoir (hey is that a french word?) Where you can swim or eat at the fly infested little shacks there. Thai food only, bugs, cricketts and stuff and hey they might have some (khrong) frogs on the go!!! :D
