Domestic tourism: a trip to Bangkok

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

We made a trip from Sisaket to Bangkok, for some change after 6 months without leaving Isaan, and before schools reopen.

First, the good news:

There were no roadblocks or any police checking along the more than 500 km through more than half a dozen provinces.

Traffic in and around Bangkok was very fluid.

Four and five star hotels in Bangkok are offering massive discount, 50 to 70% down from the usual rates.

Most shops are offering big discounts.

The rich are still rich, no worries here...the underground parking at Siam Paragon looked like a luxury car expo: Porsches of all kinds, Bentleys, Lambos...you name it...for those looking for a tea break, there was not a free table at the Oriental restaurant at 4PM, and no discount on the 180 baht small cakes...

All the restaurants were operating as usual, with all their tables and seats available, and no separation of any kind between guests and between tables...social distancing is gone...

Now the not so good news:

The traffic coming from Bangkok and heading to Saraburi and beyond was unbelievable, a 3 lane wide and almost 100 km long traffic jam...on a Wednesday at 2 PM!

Makes you wonder if the non-rich and unemployed were leaving the city in droves in order to go back to their villages and family?

Thai drivers are not getting any better.

In fact, the car dealers, nationwide, should recall the entire fleet of the country and move the steering wheels from the right to the left, in order to fit with the driving habits of the locals: everybody on the far right lane, and if you want to overtake, move to the left!

All along the Isaan highway 24, cows are let free to graze in the grass separating the two sides of the road...makes you wonder if you are in India...or if they don't care about road safety...

You are correct.

Isaan cows do not care about road safety.
