Minister plans to turn convicts into a formidable workforce to send abroad

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin

In a move to help convicts start a new life after prison, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin is planning to launch a campaign to boost their professional and language skills so they can find work overseas.

He said he was inspired when he heard about the Labour Ministry meeting 129 recruitment agencies to discuss the option of sending Thai workers overseas.

“Several foreign companies, especially from Taiwan, South Korea and countries in the Middle East and Europe want Thai workers because they are known to be hard-working and disciplined. Thailand’s ability to effectively curb the Covid-19 pandemic is also impressive,” he said.

“The Kingdom sends approximately 120,000 people to work overseas per year generating foreign exchange earnings of about Bt140 billion for the country. Of the total workers heading abroad, up to 60,000 go to Taiwan alone.”

He said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha recently called on him to develop help inmates develop handicraft-making and English-language skills, adding that this move was in line with their plan to establish a correctional-facility-turned-industrial-estate.

“We will produce skilled workers within three to six months so they will be able to work overseas once they are released from prison,” he said, adding that his ministry was teaming up with Labour Ministry for the project.

“Thai workers’ biggest weakness is poor language skills, which forces them to work as employees and not generate a high income,” he said. “If we develop their language skills, their wages can more than double.”

Can I suggest changing the the word ‘convict’ in the title to ‘ex-convict’? For a moment I was worrying Thailand had copied the North Korean model of sending prissiness abroad to work in shipyards as slaves, with their ‘salaries’ going straight to the NK government.

Where do they come up with these royally stupid Ideas.  Yes, please send me some workers who are suppose to still be incarcerated, but are being granted there freedom to work for you as the inmates do in work camps.  We we will stand over them with guns ready to shoot them should they misbehave, please!

Just send over the Government Minister who was convicted of heroin smuggling but still has a job after the fact

I believe that most countries have a question about criminal records when it comes to working visas.

Maybe this won't apply to Thailand's hard-working, disciplined ex-cons.

Hands up!

Don't move or I'll shoot.

Breathe a word of this to anyone and you're dead.

What's the combination to the safe?

Im sure the various ministers get together every morning and snort a few lines and empty a few bottles between them before composing and submitting the most ludicrous statements for press release.

Only fair after the native low lives have moved to reside in Thailand. Thailand is just sending back their own worst in return.

this surely tops the list of o wowie moments in thai government in the last 24 hours ?

edit. this has to be one of the best news releases ever done by any government in the history of this country ? there are so many awesome statements one doesn't know where to begin.

The past few weeks were brimming with astonishingly stupid, hare-brained ideas. But this one really tops them all. Congratulations, Mr. Somsak. You'll go far in this government, that much is clear!

As far as I know Thailand doesn't want certain types (convicted criminals) coming here from foreign countries, why would they expect foreign countries to accept Thai criminals

could this be classified as an export type business

Teaching the ex-cons English must mean that they want professionals fleecing the tourists.
