BANGKOK, June 24 (TNA) -- The Transport Ministry plans a national grid of motorways and railways that will be developed in parallel with each other on north-south and east-west directions.

Transport authorities discussed the project in a meeting chaired by Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob. The project was aimed at facilitating the development of new urban areas.

It includes three north-south routes with a combined distance of 2,610 kilometers. They are on Chiang Rai-Songkhla, Nong Khai-Lam Chabang and Bung Kan-Surin routes.

Five routes were designed for east-west directions, on Tak-Nakhon Phanom, Tak-Ubon Ratchathani, Kanchanaburi-Sa Kaeo, Kanchanaburi-Trat and Phuket-Surat Thani routes.

They have been planning a relatively short branch line railway to Chiang Rai since the 1930s.

This plan might take a while!

The master plan of the project was expected to be done in a year.

Ah, the master plan..what could possibly go wrong.............

I thought nothing existed outside of Bangkok to the hi-so planners.

As the great Robbie Burns said to Wee Mousie:

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft a-gley.

Much to my amazement and interest in railways, I found this map of existing and planned railways in South East Asia. Some very interesting routes such as:-

Chiang Rai to Mandalay, Chiang Rai to Kunming, Rangoon to Da Nang (The Indian Pacific), Bangkok to Hanoi, Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, Bangkok to Siem Reap (The Angkor Express) and, in my opinion, the most ambitious Delhi to Hanoi via Bangkok. By clicking on the map, you can enlarge an area of interest to you.

Looks like a high school student's version of the famous London Underground map. I live mid way between Bangkok and Chiang Mai near the SRT and am still waiting for the start of construction of the HST to CM, supposed to be up and running by 2021/22. Check back in 100 years.

Yes indeed, exactly what I thought, but it does look interesting.

Its a great idea and will remain so.

Will it ever see reality? Not in any 4 digit year...

"The project was aimed at facilitating the development of new..." pocket lining!

I'm offended. Spent hours on that.

There are lots of new double track rail routes under construction nationwide.  Major infrastructure upgrades.

So what are you talking about?

Virtually no motorways in Thailand outside Bangkok. (OK we now have no. 7 to Pattaya/Rayong).

I feel a "HUB" coming on.

And Pattaya - U-tapao (opened May 22), section to Maptaphut opening september 1.

Three more currently under construction (Ban Phaeo, Nakorn Ratchasima, Kanchanaburi).

When will construction of the first phase of the motorway from Bangkok (Bang Pa-in interchange) to Chiang Mai start? How about the southern line? And the one from Chonburi to nakorn Ratchasima via Prachinburi? And mae Sot to Tak motorway tunnel? Hat Yai to Sadao motorway? And many, many more.

I don't see any ground being broken on any of these for years. Maybe in 20-30 years, Thailand might start to look a little more like Malaysia looks now, but in the meantime everything happens at a snail's pace.

I'm half the age of the average TV poster, but I doubt I'll live long enough to see out the realization of this motorway plan.

So ONE short motorway outside of Bangkok.
