Scala ‘to be demolished’

Bangkok’s last standalone cinema Scala, which has been delighting filmgoers since December 31, 1969, dropped its curtains for the last time on Sunday (July 5) with thousands of people waiting to bid goodbye until the last light of the marquee – displaying “Final Touch of Memory” – was turned off.

 

 

On its final weekend (July 3-5), Scala screened cinema’s two masterworks – Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Blowup” and “Cinema Paradiso”, as well as Thai documentaries “The Scala” and “Phantom of Illumination”, which pay homage to standalone movie theatres.

 

 

Like other Apex cinemas, Scala too has become victim to changing times. The landowner, Chulalongkorn University, has reportedly said that the art deco building will be demolished to make way for another shopping mall.

Demolishing such a genuine art deco masterpiece as La Scala is just plain wrong, though I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for the BMA to wake up and realise that they've just lost another treasure.???? Whatever happened to preserving heritage sites in Thailand? With a few baht worth of renovation and restoration it could have become quite a tourist destination.

 

Chulalongkorn University being behind it, AND building yet another shopping mall that Bangkok doesn't need and probably doesn't want anyway, is clearly another in their long list of crimes against intelligence and wisdom in favour of the almighty Baht!

Thai Culture architecture is Shopping malls ! Should put it in the dictionary for a definition

Reports keep calling this building "Art Deco" when it is nothing of the sort! This is a bit of Thai 1970s kitsch architecture, and quite ugly too. It'll be a shame to lose such an auditorium in the heart of downtown Bangkok, which could be repurposed for live performances, but architecturally the place is garbage.

I do not see much social distancing..........

Whew, another shopping mall going up. I was concerned we didn't already have enough of them.
