Lights out at Pub Street: Business owners face darkest hour

Featured Replies

Since Siem Reap province publicised  “its reopening” last month, the Ministry of Tourism has announced new safety guidelines and codes of conduct for tourism businesses to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and attract domestic tourists.

Khmer Times visited the famous temple town this week to report from the ground the current state of the once-tourism hotspot finding near-apocalyptic scenes with extreme levels of abandoned shop fronts and sense of despair. The mass exodus of foreign arrivals – due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – arguably has hit the town worse than any other part of the Kingdom.

With business owners along the street now facing the prospect of three to five years of significantly lower arrivals, many have appeared to simply walk away. Established in the early 1990s after mass tourism came to the Kingdom, Pub Street has brought in much- needed foreign currency from tourists looking to eat and drink after a day spent exploring the temples of Angkor Wat.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Very sad indeed, hard to find a better atmosphere anywhere in Asia than Pub Street in full swing.

This guy is like a shoe on the wrong foot but is so funny. Check his Pub Street experience here.

Lights out at Pub Street: Business owners face darkest hour

Pub Street in Siem Reap is similar to Walking Street in Pattaya and Bangla Road in Patong which cater for and rely mainly on tourists. So, sadly, no tourists, no business. However here in Siem Reap it is not all doom and gloom as there are still many Khmer and foreigner owned bars, pubs and restaurants away from Pub Street that are still very much in business catering for the LOCAL population (Khmers, ex-pats etc.) as many have done in the past. I was in such an establishment last Saturday evening, situated in the Wat Bo area, away from the main tourist hot spots and what a great night with Khmer pals in an almost packed restaurant.

I wonder why people even need to go out with all the weed available there ! hahaha
