The Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP) has launched a project to put One Tambon One Product (Otop) items online.

Nattapol Ransitpol, DIP’s director-general, said the department is concerned about Otop businesses that rely entirely on tourists to generate revenue.

“Though the lockdown measures have been eased, tourism has not returned to normal as yet,” he said. “Therefore, we have decided to help Otop businesses operate online.”

He said DIP will provide training courses and first-hand advice to Otop entrepreneurs, such as showing them how to sell their products via e-commerce platforms, how they can use information technology to boost their competitiveness, create an identity for their products, improve their production process to reduce costs and meet international standards.

“Initially, we will select more than 1,000 Otop businesses to participate in the project, and we expect to generate more than Bt500 million in revenue,” he said. “In the future, this project will cover Otop businesses nationwide to help Thai industry recover, support change in the industrial structure as well as stimulate the economy.”

I live less than 30 meters from the OTOP building in our village. Once every 2 or 3 years a couple of vans roll up and a few people enter the building. The rest of the time it sits empty, they might as well conduct business online because the building is definitely not necessary.
