That leaves:- Work => probably not applicable (needs a Work Permit and a stack of company paperwork - is your son/family running a business that could help?) Marriage to a Thai => maybe Education => learn Thai (sadly, heavily abused in the past so could be a difficult route) Thailand Elite => $$ but little hassle if you have the cash None of the above requires insurance, but of course they're not free or necessarily easy. You could possibly get in as a dependant of your son @ubonjoe would know what's what there. "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
July 10, 20205 yr ^Also Type O retirement visa, though it will not be possible to get this until the borders are open again. This visa will require 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or proof of a pension of 65,000 baht per month. You cannot apply for this visa in your home country, but need to apply for it in a nearby Thai embassy or consulate (Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc).

You could then apply for a one year extension based upon retirement during the last 30 days of the 90 day entry from the non-o visa. You would need 800k baht in a Thai bank for 2 months or proof of 65k baht income. No insurance is required to apply for that extension of stay. Or you could enter visa exempt or with a tourist visa and then apply for a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) at immigration. Same financial proof is needed but the 800k baht only needs to be in a Thai bank on the day you apply.
