Pattaya back to square one! Fallout from Egyptian soldier case dents tourism again

5pm.jpg

Thai media 77kaoded went to Pattaya and found that the case of the Egytian soldier infected in nextdoor Rayong had dealt a further body blow to tourism.

Pattaya tourism - still reeling from the economic disaster that is the coronavirus pandemic - is now back to square one, was their message.

To substantiate this claim they spoke to two female deckchair vendors.

Waree said that the furor over the Egyptian was causing jitters and great concern.

Her business had been really quiet - now it was non-existent.

Suphansa expressed shock at the case saying that she thought Thailand was getting to grips with the crisis and she was "starting to breathe again".

But the events in Rayong had set everything back.

She said that Pattaya businesses were following the mask wearing, social distancing and gel distributing rules to the letter.

Now it was time for the authorities to follow suit and do their bit and stop a second wave of infections.

Thaivisa notes that the Thai government has been hugely criticized for allowing "privileged foreigners" with coronavirus back into the country.

Those pictures actually look enticing.  If I was thinking of going , now would be the time. No hoards of people cluttering up the place.

Expats living there probably appreciate the difference.

Wow in my years in Pattaya never seen it like this. Not a single ladyboy strutting his silicone stuff and molesting farangs.

Yeah, we need an Egyptian every week. Not a single Chinese in sight. Nice.

It seems that the DLT (Department of Land Transport) that administrates drivers licenses and renewals has changed their procedures in light of the Rayong and Bangkok scares. I'm not sure what government departments have changed their procedures.

which means? a bit more explicitely?

More anti foreigner rhetoric and beliefs. Does everyone in Thailand believe that foreigners are in the middle of a zombie holocaust? I am stuck in UK and live a very normal existence. The same existence I always lived with a bit of social responsibility and distancing thrown in.

I am not a deranged plague infested zombie because I am not in Thailand .... I think.

Can't knock the beach sellers enthusiasm and optimism putting out 2000 chairs for 30 customers

Same strategy she used for her failed noodle stand!

About everyone.

The "perfect" result of the uneducated panic-mongering/dumbing down by the media/propaganda.

People have no idea about the lifetime/contagiousness of the virus.

People have no idea about the limited rate of severe illness/death.

Avoiding a shopping center two days after an infected person walked there.

How paranoid is that!!!

Creating the illusion of a zero infection country.

With this the country is doomed.

Today I told the neighbor that I would travel to Samui next week.

Guess what the response was?

COVID!!!

Not zombies.

600,000 dead people and ghosts.

Thank you!  I was just about to say the same thing.  Disgraceful it stands there year after year unfinished in Pattaya's most prominent spot.

A non-story really.  There are no foreign tourists any more  Thai ones come only at the weekends.

A fairly conclusive survey to support this claim.
