CHIANG MAI, July 17 (TNA) -  A Thai man has become the country’s first patient to receive liver from a living organ donor, who is his own daughter.

Boonyuen Meemana, a resident of the northern Lampang province, suffered liver cancer and had no other choice of treatment.  The medical team of Chiang Mai University successfully transplanted the liver to Boonyuen four months ago.

In the transplant surgery, the surgical team removed part of the liver of Boonyuen’s daughter, Salinee Chang-ngern, and transplanted it into the patient using telescopes.

An amazing surgical process.

Not at all a world  first  but  definitely a positive  demonstration of Thai  surgical  capacity.

Surgical  telescopes   are a  real thing. But I think in translation maybe the  wrong word was  used for endoscope in this procedure.

After the operation the doctor was heard yelling " Thar she blows "

Actually, the word you want is laparoscope. It is the technical term for what is also known as keyhole surgery. Been in use since 1910 on animals and humans for decades. Endoscopy is very similar, though.

EDIT: Kudos to the doctors. ????

Well done, in the west about 5% of transplants are done this way, with around 6,000 from deceased donors [USA] annually, the technology has been around since 1980's.

One has to ask the question why has it taken so long to be performed here. Probably awaiting for a strong enough amulet to be developed.

what a nice story, well done to all concerned.

Should  get some of these  then

Congratulations!

Doctors are the one asset Thailand does have. I guess at some point the universities had a sponsor high up and got developed far beyond other aspects of Thailand.
