Communities call on Wissanu to continue with local power plant projects

Some 10 representatives of community enterprises from the East and Northeast went to the Energy Ministry on Thursday (July 23) to submit a letter to acting minister Wissanu Krea-ngam asking that the community-based power plant projects be pushed ahead as they will generate a minimum revenue of Bt120 million as well as supply 3 megawatts of energy to communities.

 

This community-based power plant project was part of former energy minister Sontirat Sontijirawong’s “energy for all” policy.

 

The representatives said this project will prove to be truly useful and practical for all involved, from investors to farmers who can grow energy crops as well as village funds and community enterprises, which will receive a share of the revenue earned from a two-decade power purchase agreement.

 

“We are not part of any political groups, nor do we support any minister. We are only here to say we hope the community-based power plant project goes ahead. Even if our communities are not chosen for this project, we will not regret it. We only want an opportunity to compete with others,” said Varakorn Worawan, chairman of the Eastern Forest Conservation Group.
