Students are right to protest against govt, survey shows

A survey of 1,308 respondents conducted by the “Super Poll” research centre showed that 77 per cent believe that protests were organised by students themselves, while 23 per cent said the student protests were funded by local or foreign political agencies.

 

The survey, conducted from July 20 to 23, saw respondents being interviewed directly over the phone or via social-media chats. 

 

Of the respondents, 98.1 per cent also said they did not want students to interfere in the work of the country’s key institutions, though the remainder saw nothing wrong with that. 

 

However, 53.9 per cent agreed that it was time to protest against the government’s political and economic failures. 

 

Noppadon Kannika, Super Poll’s director, said politicians’ actions were to blame for the recent protests, adding that if the students only targeted the government, they may be successful in achieving their goal.

I've said this before let's see. One of the things students (and in reality I think the majority of the country) want is parliament disolved. They might get their way but not the way they want it. Prayut will disolve parliament, put his uniform back on and then the real trouble will begin. Personally I can't see him going quietly. Don't be suprised if a few bombs start going off or being found.

The only argument of military-rule supporters was that those generals who confiscated the future of the Thai people are the only ones who can keep the country together, either because "Thailand is not ready for democracy" or "this our culture this is how we've always done". 

 

But even at governing they proved more disastrous than civilian governments. 

 

It's about time everyone acknowledged this institution is doing more harm than good to Thailand.

it is obvious you have been here a long time (or visiting) to remember the difference????

Anybody at all would have been right to protest immediately after the coup.

 

The passage of time can not alter the fact that military coups are illegal and never right.

 

People should have felt outraged at the overthrow of democracy engineered by a few self serving politicians and generals egged on by a minority of the urban population living under the false impression that they are somehow better people than everyone else.

The problem with that "this our culture this is how we've always done". argument is it was designed via treason

 

Think back to all coups

The reason they happens is because the elected government has no support from the Police nor the Military

 

Instead of serving who they were sworn to serve they stand down. In the last one even as government house & voters stations

were being overrun they stood down. Is that not treason?

 

Instead they stand aside licking their lips like wolves letting protestors fight & take over even things like an international airport

all the while doing nothing especially their sworn duty

 

THIS "this our culture this is how we've always done".  Is not the Thai citizens culture it is the Military's culture of gaining $$$ & power

 

No elected government can survive without support/control of their own Police & Military

Instead the Police & Military of Thailand are nothing more than paid mercenaries going to the highest bidder or

in the end they themselves once again belly up to the trough while they steal the future of the citizens of Thailand

You may be very well be right.

 

After all…Prayut (and Suthep) conspired to create the 2014 street violence which gave Prayut an excuse to hijack the government. Lies, fraud, and treachery are a major part of his job description.

 

And Prayut has already shown that he is more than willing to attack and inflict harm on the Thai people…to get what he wants.

 

He's been a greedy, immoral, hypocrite for years and it's made him filthy rich...he's not going to stop now.

Sad thing is there will always be a minority of snivelling brown noses who support them!

If there are Bombs the Student will have to find someone to make em. An element of intelligence is required.

There where protesters   but they where swiftly rounded up taken away for "attitude adjustment" camps for weeks at unknown locations,threats made to family members  some went into exile overseas.

Yes, and very brave those few protesters were. 

 

But what is clearly needed is a massive turnout of outraged citizens with numbers that can't be threatened or bullied ......... only shot. And the protests need to be nationwide in every major city otherwise , once again , they will fail from lack of mass support.

I know what you're getting at, but they can just ban the congregations and extend the state of emergency for another 6 months for a foreigner sneezing whilst walking past an extra spicy noodle shop these days

Don't agree with that, he was also, ultimately, a dictator, dismantling the bastions of developing and maintaining quality democracy.

In the weeks to come we will see what the government response will be to the several planned protests.  Will it be the benevolent grandfather response (all be it fake) or the iron fist in a velvet glove approach....or out and out batons and bullets.  Not a great choice! 

It might have been handy if the survey said students and the people have a right to protest, once again , the history of Thailand's political is being challenged by students.

Uh-huh, lots of nodding and oh-hooooing - nothing will get done. A small bunch of students is the only one willing to do what it takes.
