Everybody travelling to the beaches should know how to treat jellyfish stings, the Department of Medical Services said.

Dr Somsak Akksilp, the department’s director general, said many people beachgoers suffer injuries from either sharp objects or get stung by sea creatures like sea urchins and jelly fish.

“Therefore, it is important to learn how to protect oneself from such dangers, especially from box jellyfish,” he said.

Dr Mingkwan Wichaidit, director of the department’s Institute of Dermatology, said after a box jellyfish sting, the venom spreads through the body affecting the circulatory system, the heart and may even cause a rash.

“If the sting covers more than 10 per cent of a victim’s body, they will be dead within five minutes,” she said. “People can protect themselves by avoiding the sea during jellyfish season as well as wearing socks, clothes or a diving suit before entering the water.”

She also said the tentacles should not be removed with bare hands because it can remain potent for many hours.

“Pour vinegar on the stung area for 30 minutes and remove the tentacles using cloth. Use brine or water if the sting is near the eyes,” she said.

“Provide first aid and send the victim to hospital immediately if they show any signs of heart and lung problems.”

Don't go in the water?

Pouring vinegar for thirty minutes would require a 45 gallon drum.

Circulatory system... boring

heart... boring

BUT WAIT, it may even cause a rash?

Lord save me.

There seems to be a lot of posters on here that are afraid of the water, not just what is in it.

Why would you go to the beach if you were not going to swim.

Huhu I didn't know that. Thanks for advice ????

"STINGER SUITS" from Australia are a good product. Also available in Thailand. They do look a bit "funny" but are very comfortable to wear. I have one
