Overseas Thai workers urged to join fund to avail of compensation in emergencies

Thai workers seeking employment overseas have been urged to apply for membership of the Overseas Thai Workers Fund so that they can be appropriately compensated in case of an accident or emergency.

 

 

“It is revealed that some Thai workers have been injured and hospitalised due to the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon earlier this week. This is an example of why workers need to be a fund member,” said Suchart Pornchaiwisetkun, director-general of the Department of Employment.

 

“Fund members who are hospitalised overseas will be entitled to medical allowance up to a maximum of Bt30,000. In case they become disabled, they will receive an additional Bt15,000,or Bt30,000 in case of total disability," Suchart said.

 

“Workers affected by war, natural disaster or pandemic that are officially announced by the government of the respective country where they work, or become unemployed due to an incident, will also be entitled to Bt15,000 compensation,” he added.

 

Eligible applicants to the Overseas Thai Workers Fund must be those seeking overseas employment via registered employment agencies or via the Department of Employment directly.

 

“The application fee is in the range of Bt300-Bt500, depending on the country, and is completely voluntary,” added Suchart. “The fund will provide coverage even after the employment contract is over for up to five years, but only if the member is still living in that country.

 

“The department strongly recommends that Thai workers become members of the fund, which will greatly help in case of an accident or emergency " he said.

Medical allowance of up to B30,000, B30,000 for total disability? 

 

That won't go far - probably wouldn't cover the cost of repatriation from anywhere outside SE Asia!

Might fix a broken nail !

It should be compulsory, as it is in the Philippines. That's how they're able to afford to keep running so many repatriation flights and even reach out and help their citizens injured in Beirut and fly home the dead COVID-19 OFW for burial, etc. But you're not going to get much for Bt500 unless there's a lot of members and a skinny administration.

the amulet makers need to get busy with a Ammonium Nitrate version .. 

 I freely admit that I know very little about about the various Thai "national insurance" and "social security" schemes; but if this one is typical of the sort of benefits/cover offered, then it is no surprise that so many (most) don't bother to pay into them. It strikes me that the only real benefit will be to the cohort of civil servants who will have the nice secure jobs "managing" the scheme.

Last year AiS Thai insurance quoted me an annual premium of 45,000 baht for a health policy/insurance

maximum payout for medical cover/operation 36,000 baht, one claim per year

all other services such as bed, doctors rounds, anesthetist, all capped to a maximum which worked out to be about 60% of the actual costs, balance payable by me.

Follow-up appointments not covered.

Better to keep the 45,000 in the bank as I would be paying the rest anyway....

Insurance policy my backside, should be called an insurance scam.
