Supant Mongkolsuthree, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) will ask new Finance Minister Predee Daochai to lower barriers to doing business in Thailand, said Supant Mongkolsuthree, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries.

The JSCCIB wants the government to set up a public-private committee to boost ease of doing business. It will also ask the minister to revise arcane rules deemed to be obstacles to doing business in Thailand, he added.

The moves would boost Thailand’s World Bank ranking for ease of doing business from its current 21st place, Supant said.

The joint standing committee will also ask the government to extend the relief measures beyond their original end dates to mitigate impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak, he said.

He said the government should also boost the property market by reducing mortgage fees and transfer fees for residences worth up to Bt50 million. This would increase demand for upscale real estate asset, which would help lift the economy, he added.

And maybe remove the arcane shareholding rules?

Get rid of BOI and apply it's rules to all companies. 100% foreign ownership and no requirement to hire Thais to get work permits. Otherwise, pffft.

They call for this every year.  Problem is Thailand is facing a demographic cliff.  The population is aging fast and there will soon be half as many young people meaning fewer consumers and fewer people to pay off the debts of this generations mad squander (subs anyone!)... At the same time the government remains archaic and xenophobic, squandering opportunities to enable foreign investment and immigration.

Thailand.... the only country in the world where is it actually written in law that Thais are too stupid to compete with foreigners... "Alien business Act B.E. 2542 annex List 3"

It's a small price to pay for all those free trade agreements that the refuse to honor the other way around.

"Oh, we developing countee"

Wishful thinking.

For years, digital workers have been businesses from Thailand and exporting sales while the gov turn a blind eye. The smart thing to do would be cut the red tape and let them set up their business in Thailand and pay taxes, but... nope.

I’m guessing this guy has some interest in this.  The rich still have money.

This government will not change the system that works so well for them

A good start might be to lift the barriers at all international airports. Surely this could help and might just be accomplished with a lot less mooting and mulling followed by clear unambiguous decisions and an action plan that actually makes it easier to achieve the intended aim.

Let all farang buy 1 rai of land
