Will COVID-19 sound the death knell for sacred Khmer dance?

A group of Cambodian classical dancers, after years of tireless work, has gained recognition as the first and only spiritual dance troupe in Cambodia. However, for months now, their efforts to preserve the traditional performing art has been threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Will they win this battle or will it be their end? No one can tell yet, writes Taing Rinith.

 

In an open-air pavilion of an art school in a rural village near Siem Reap province’s Banteay Srei Temple, a group of Cambodian ladies, aged 18 to 26, can be seen rehearsing a Royal ballet dance. With their slender bodies and lit up facial expressions, the dancers, collectively known as the Sacred Dancers of Angkor, elegantly display their flexibility in hand and leg movements, just like in the carvings of the dancing Apsara goddesses on the bas relief of Angkor Wat.
