Trump says he is inclined to host G7 meeting after the Nov. 3 election

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he is interested in hosting a Group of Seven summit in a "calmer atmosphere" after the November presidential election, and that he has not decided whether to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin.

 

In May as the coronavirus pandemic was spreading, Trump postponed a G7 summit he had hoped to hold in June until September or later, and said he hoped to expand the list of invitees to include Australia, Russia, South Korea and India.

 

"I'm much more inclined to do it sometime after the election. ... We could do it through teleconference or we could do it through a meeting," the Republican president said at White House news conference.

 

Trump, who is trailing Democratic candidate Joe Biden in opinion polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election, said he had decided on the new time frame because it would provide a "better, calmer atmosphere to have a G7."

 

Trump gave no specific date and said no invitations had been sent out.

 

Asked whether he would invite Putin, Trump said: "I don't know but we have invited a number of people to the meeting. I certainly would invite him to the meeting."

 

In a telephone conversation on June 1, Trump and Putin discussed "progress toward convening the G7," according to the White House.

 

The G7 includes Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan and Canada in addition to the United States. Russia was expelled from the then so-called G8 group in 2014 after annexing the Crimea region from Ukraine.

Wouldn’t worry about it trump. Highly unlikely you will be in any position to affect G7 meetings and who attends once November has passed.

What is the point if he is not re-elected?

Mr. Trump they not join your apprentice show! Coz that is only "show" what you can do after Nov.3!

Probably he doesn't want to show the American voters what the others think about him.

 

Just another lame attempt to somehow gain in the polls. The "G7" is composed of the member states & not his decision who is in and isn't. He can invite all he wants, but it wouldn't be a "G7". Considering pandemic more out of control than when previous meeting scheduled, gonna have some no shows.

Maybe he should invite the Central Park 5 while he is at it.

US can win next Men's World Cup with Trump's help: "I have just signed an executive order that US Men's soccer team can have 20 players on field at any time"

OH!! he can host it as a private Hotelier as he won't be President...

As an emcee for the opening remarks and introduction of the new President. 

Trump would like to hold the G7 in November so that the carving of his face on Mount Rushmore would be over by then, and that the New American Civil War (NACW) would not have started in earnest yet. 

 

He has to deal with a very narrow window here... requires lots of careful planning...

Be assured of this, there will be absolutely no ‘calmer atmosphere’ anywhere near Trump after the election.

 

That said, he seems intent on continuing to do Putin favors.

Rumour is that he will be doing lecture tours specialising in 20th Century history.  Starting with how the Spanish Flu ended the 2nd world war.  That would be in 1917, over twenty years before the 2nd world war actually started.
