Thousands of Swedes got false positive COVID-19 result due to test kit fault

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - About 3,700 people in Sweden were told in error that they had the coronavirus due to a fault in a COVID-19 testing kit from China, the Public Health Agency said on Tuesday.

The kit from BGI Genomics could not distinguish between very low levels of the virus and a negative result, the agency said.

"The supplier must adjust the performance that is required for this test to be used," Karin Tegmark Wisell, the head of its microbiology department, said.

The test kit has been widely exported to other countries, she added, but could not give further details.

BGI Genomics, two of whose subsidiaries are on a U.S. economic blacklist of companies implicated in human rights violations regarding China's treatment of Uighurs, could not immediately be reached for comment.

It received emergency use authorization from U.S. authorities for its coronavirus testing kits in March and got an Emergency Use Listing from the World Health Organization in May.

The Swedish labs that evaluate the tests have adjusted their methodology. The agency could not say how many tests had been done using the kit but only a minority of cases appeared to be involved, when the virus is at very low levels.

Sweden said the false results had only marginally affected statistics on infections.

On Tuesday, the agency reported that since the first case of COVID-19 was identified, there had been 86,891 confirmed infections in Sweden and 5,814 deaths.

Cases, intensive care admissions and deaths have been falling in recent weeks. The agency will present its strategy for easing some remaining restrictions on public events, such as football matches, next Tuesday.

So give you plague then sell you a faulty kit - pure China. Wonder exactly how much refunds are coming from fake or faulty tests kits and unusable PPi from China - bet i can guess though

Virus from China, Faulty kits to test for it from China. Numerous reports of positives without symptoms. World in lockdown because of this.

Is it just me, or is there something so wrong with this whole story?

As with all schemes, the answer will probably lie in following the money trail. Because this is big bucks.

Governments all over the world were quick to vote funds to fight the pandemic, but frontline workers are still to this day complaining about lack of essential PPE and supplies to treat sick people, while politicians are ducking and diving when having to answer questions about why the aid is not reaching the intended sectors. Most often used excuse is delivery problems. How difficult is it to transport something from a warehouse to a hospital

But will the MSM ever make the effort and investigate the money trail?

I am not holding my breath on that one.

Might also be interesting to know which countries' kits were used up to know in the worst hit counties.

Sorry, just frustrated and venting a bit.

Made in China - QED !!!!

Not surprising. I setup a small network at our sales office in China about 8 years ago. I ran out of network cables so I went to the local IT shop (dodging all the saliva on the pavement on the way) to buy 50 of them.

Only 11 of them worked ????.

made the disease, spread it, sell the kits and then the cure

This means those with no virus were  told they have minimal number of viruses, or those with low numbers were told they have none? Or both?
