Fisheries body sends SOS to PM, says IUU regulations destroying Thai fishing

The National Fisheries Association of Thailand has urged the government to solve the problem of IUU (Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing) that has been going on for more than six years, and has forced fishermen in 22 provinces to sell more than 2,500 fishing boats.

In a letter to the prime minister, association president Kamjorn Mongkholtriluck, said: “If the problem still persists, we estimate that Thai fishermen might have to sell over 5,000 boats that do not comply with the IUU regulations from the total of 12,000 fishing boats nationwide,” he said.

Kamjorn added that in the past eight months around 3,000 fishing boats had to stop working, resulting in loss of at least Bt10 billion income per month. “This, coupled with the impact of Covid-19, has resulted in loss of supply to the seafood industry with estimated value at over Bt300 billion,” he said.

“Fishermen who have to stop working due to IUU regulations want the government to help relax the regulations, or at least buy the boats from them at 100 per cent price to help them start a career in other fields.

“Furthermore, the association wants the government to fast-track loans to fishermen from Government Savings Bank (GSB) and Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC). The government had promised us Bt5.3 billion a few months ago, but so far the loans are still not ready for disbursement,” he added.

“In the letter, we put forth three demands: amend the Fishery Decree BE2558 with participation of the association’s representatives; establish a national committee chaired by the prime minister to solve fishery problems; dissolve the current committees on illegal fishery and fishery labour,” said Kamjorn. “If there is no response from the government in the next 7-10 days, we will march to Government House to demand a meeting with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha directly.”

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, said that the ministry had received the letter and would present the demands to the prime minister within the next week. He also said he had contacted the GSB and BAAC to arrange loans for fishermen as soon as possible.

Loans and restructuring are good ideas. Relaxing of the rules is not. Finally fish was comming back (previous reports).

So things are well. I admit i dont eat much fish but i havent read about high prices of sea food so its not as if there is a problem.

Buying boats is good too but of course you dont buy them for new value. Just pay the going rate the have beem abusing the ocean for their profit now its time to take a hit and get out or clean their acts up.

Savage attacks on the ocean wildlife needs to stop. Now look at China and their dirty huge fleet of 280+ boats raping everything in sight at the Galopagos islands area. Now this is a travesty that once again shows the Chinese are devil pigs with no concern for anything and anyone..

The problem for the NFAT is that the Government has solved the problem of IUU fishing!

The police will be joining the march to insist that they be allowed to keep open their illegal gambling dens so they can afford to pay their Mia Noys.

Yes please Sir; will you let us go back to all the bad old ways of using Slaves and breaking every law that was ever written ?  Why we have to do what Farang say when we never have before Boss ?  Nobody in Thailand cares about the outside World or how they may be affecting it !

Seen this in Spain a few years ago ... every day a fleet of fishing trawlers out to catch as much fish as possible ... when , finally , the fish was gone , they came running to the government for help ... human nature ...

The IUU regulations Didn't Destry the Thai Fishing The Thais done that All by themselves .

Why?  The thais have been using Illegal  Fishing  Tactics since Year Dot they just been getting away with it all.

The Thais ,They think that they can do whatever they want and Ignore the rest of the world that made rules to make  the fishing to be done the right way.

Same as with any other Law . Care factor Zero.

That is true, but it is so very difficult to find any major nation that hasn't done the same.

Buy more submarines.  The PM says they are for protecting the sovereignty  of Thailand’s oceans

According to the documents of the Fisheries Department of Thailand, back in the sixties the average amount of fish caught in the Gulf of Siam in one hour was 360Kg of fish. Today it is 18 Kg per hour. No further comment.

that's why mirrors need to erected. People complain in western nations when their previous criminal practices are highlighted, stating that's the past and that 'I wasn't involved'  but imo those practices should be immortalized in all their infamy. If your country became powerful from the blood of others then it should never be forgotten that's how you obtained your 'greatness'..

I will agree with you once again, and unfortunately, what you propose, ie mirrors, will never come about. We can see what the powers will never acquiesce to seeing or even come close to understanding. The "people" (like you and I) will never have a say in the matters of power and money.
