Second UK lockdown? COVID hospital admissions double every eight days

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's health minister said on Friday that the novel coronavirus was accelerating across the country, with hospital admissions doubling every eight days, but refused to say if another national lockdown would be imposed next month.

 

The United Kingdom has reported the fifth largest number of deaths from COVID-19 in the world, after the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.

 

Asked repeatedly by Sky News about the prospect of a second national lockdown next month, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that a lockdown was a last resort, but that the government would do whatever it takes to tackle the virus.

 

"The number of people in hospital is doubling every eight days or so ... we will do what it takes to keep people safe," Hancock said. "We keep these things under review."

 

Asked about a second lockdown, he said: "I can't give you that answer now."

 

COVID-19 cases started to rise again in Britain in September, with between 3,000 and 4,000 positive tests recorded daily in the last week. This is still some way behind France, which is seeing more than 10,000 new cases a day.

 

On Thursday, Britain recorded 21 deaths from the disease, taking the total under the government's accounting method to 41,705. Key statistics on the prevalence of the virus are due later on Friday.

 

More than 10 million people in the United Kingdom are already in local lockdown and the London Evening Standard said figures due for release on Friday will show a sharp rise in COVID cases in London, putting Britain's capital at risk of restrictions on socialising over the next two weeks.

 

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was criticised by opposition politicians for his initial response to the outbreak and the government has struggled to ensure sufficient testing in recent weeks.

 

Asked by LBC radio why the testing system was such a "shambles", Hancock said Dido Harding, who is in charge of the system, had done an "an extraordinary job."

 

A COVID-19 test known as DnaNudge that gives results in just over an hour and which requires no laboratory was accurate in almost all cases, according to an academic review in the Lancet.

 

"The critical thing in terms of usefulness is that the machine doesn't need to be in a lab - it is about the size of a shoebox - therefore you can put one say in an A&E department and they can know whether people coming in have got the coronavirus or not," Hancock said.

The number of deaths is a matter of dispute.

The Robert Koch Institute publishes daily reports on how many COVID-19 patients have died and thus continuously updates the number of so-called "corona deaths". Accordingly, about 3.6 percent of those who tested positive died. It is not yet clear whether all of these Covid 19 patients actually died "from" or even some only "with" the virus. According to the Robert Koch Institute, around 85 percent of all deceased in Germany were older than 70 years. Most of them suffered from one or more previous illnesses. Death rates vary by country and by methods of detection. 

 

One can say that the C19 virus is more aggressive than a normal flu virus, but far away from a deadly disease in any case.

Mind explaining that to the almost 1 million death people so far? That number is probably quite a bit higher, actually, because not all covid related deaths are recorded as covid related deaths. The second wave is about to hit many countries in Europe (including the UK) and the USA, so the number of deaths is very probably going to increase again. So far, 200,000 in the USA, 42,000 in the UK, with numbers on the rise.

Some very simple measures can drastically reduce the number of infections and deaths: social distance, wear a mask, wash your hands, it’s as simple as that. If someone can not see the need to practice those simple rules, then Yinn has every right to call those people covidiots. And please don’t play that ‘freedom’ card, because what some people see as freedom is just another way to say “I will do as I damned well please, and screw everyone else”.

Point being there are almost 3 times as many people being born per year than are dying,  the Wuflu is not killing a high percentage of the population...there are still lots and lots of people left on earth  it is not an

"extinction level event"    its more like mass hysteria.

There has been a massive failure to control the virus by the government.  They are trying as hard as they can to avoid a total lockdown again and I think that is sensible at this point.  They have said that if there is a national lockdown they will keep businesses and schools open but shut pubs, restaurants and entertainment venues.  I can see some logic in that but it's a pretty depressing thought.

 

In the meantime in the new local lockdown zones, pubs and restaurants have to close at 10.00pm.  Something they also did in Thailand if I remember correctly.  I didn't get that logic then and I don't now. Basically they are saying you can go out and mix with your friends until 10.00pm but no later!  Does that mean that research has shown that most people get the virus after 10.00pm?

Around 650,000 people worldwide die from annual flu every year. Therefore the entire population has never been locked away. Precautions ok, but no headless mass histeria please.

and one can say this is the most politicized health issue in recent history unfortunately leading to many cases of underreporting to save face for politicians..

I said the reaction to those 5000 worldwide deaths was overboard/over reaction where as the Thai government reaction to more road deaths in one day than the total (alleged) Wuflu deaths (in Thailand) is totally underwhelming/under reaction.

Your article (‘Confounding’: Covid may have already peaked in many African countries, 16 September) hints that there may be natural immunity in African countries where Covid-19 has settled down. This is likely to be true, and not just in Africa. If the evidence is closely examined, up to half of the worldwide population may have natural immunity. In none of the natural “experiments” of Sars-CoV-2 exposure within a closed group has the infection rate risen above 50%. In Lombardy, a study of 5,484 individuals who had been exposed by close contact with an infected individual were tested for antibody positivity, with 51.5% testing positive.

This hints at pre-existing natural immunity in the population. This has been convincingly demonstrated, with a study in Nature showing that 35% of a population cohort using historical samples had demonstrable CD4 T cell activity against Sars-CoV-2, never having been previously exposed to the new virus.

The implication is that 35%-50% of the population is naturally immune, and up to 25% antibody prevalence is being approached in some areas of the world (17.5% in London). We could already be approaching 75% immunity in those regions, well within the estimated 60%-80% needed for herd immunity. So, where death rates have settled to historical norms, this would be explicable by natural immunity. We may be closer to the end of this pandemic than we think.

• During the past six weeks we have received good-quality information from Chicago, Heidelberg, Bari, Israel and Iran demonstrating that low blood levels of vitamin D lead to an increased risk of Covid-19 infection, and high risks of severe or fatal disease. From Spain we have received the result of a randomised controlled trial demonstrating that vitamin D (in its part-activated form calcidiol) given to 50 patients on admission to hospital with Covid-19 pneumonia reduced the need for intensive care from 50% (in the control group) to 2%, and eliminated deaths.

I upped my D3 in late January but more importantly got the wife onto it for she makes it a lot slower than I (darker skin). Watch a few John Campbell you tube lectures on the subject, very informative very early in this pandemic. If people would of listened to this guy months ago, lives would of been saved..
