Beware of rain, flood, landslides

BANGKOK: -- The weather bureau yesterday warned many areas to brace for heavy rain with the possibility of flash-floods and landslides. Coastal areas are at the greatest risk.

A low-pressure area in the Gulf of Thailand between now and Wednesday will bring heavy rain to the capital and Eastern Seabord, according to the Meteorological Department.

Meanwhile in the North, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son experienced heavy rain yesterday.

In Mae Hong Son, rains partially damaged a historic chapel at Wat Hua Wieng. The wooden, Burmese-style chapel houses a Buddha image created by Burmese craftsmen almost a hundred years ago.

Fine Arts Department Northern Region Office head Sahawat Nanna said staff were assessing the damage. They are checking on other places of interest at risk of storm damage, too.

In Wiset Chai Chan district of Angthong more than 120 homes, including a police residence, were destroyed by a storm yesterday. Trees along the Pohprayatharua-to-Suphan Buri road were brought down.

The department storm and flood warning covers Bangkok, Rayong, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi, Trat, Chumphon, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla.

Warning of violent storms in East

TRAT: -- Trat province Deputy Governor Anant Phithayayont warned residents this morning of possible violent thunderstorms and possible hail from now until Wednesday.

The eastern provinces were the subject of an alert by the Meteorological Department about possible tropical storms caused by low pressure over the Gulf of Thailand.

The tropical storms will produce heavy rain and gusty winds in some areas of the South, Central and Eastern regions, including Trat province, said Mr Anant.

The deputy governor suggested people to keep abreast of weather forecasts, especially those living in valleys where landslides might occur.

As for those living on river banks, they should stay alert, especially for flash flood. The deputy governor also suggested people to cut branches of big trees as gusty winds might break the branches and damage their residences.

Mr Anant encouraged residents affected by the tropical storms to contact local administrative organisations or district offices in order to receive emergency aid.

Update:

Heavy weather coming

BANGKOK: -- Twelve provinces, mostly in the South, are expected to be hit by heavy rains and a freak tropical storm between Sunday and Wednesday, the Meteorological Department announced Sunday.

A low pressure area is expected to pass through Thailand's lower South region with strong winds across the Central and Eastern regions, bringing heavy downpours and wind storms during the four-day period.

Scattered rain was expected to cover about 60 per cent of Bangkok Sunday with the minimum temperature in the Thai capital forecast at 25 degrees Celsius to a maximum temperature of 34 Celsius, the department said.

The weather forecast warned that a new wave of high pressure from China is expected to cover Thailand's northeastern and eastern regions from Monday through Thursday and this might also bring heavy rain and strong winds. The Metereological Department urged residents in the upper North to be on alert for changes of weather during the period.

Heavy rains expected to hit Trat

Trat Province warns residents of heavy rains and gusty winds.

Trat Deputy Governor Anant Phithayayon (อนันต์ พิทยายน) reports that low pressure area at the Gulf of Thailand has caused heavy rains and gusty winds at some areas in the Eastern provinces. The rains might lead to flash floods especially at flood-prone areas.

From now until May 2nd, residents in Trat are suggested to remain cautious on harmful weather conditions and not to wear electricity conducting accessories while being outdoor as lightning might strike as it rains.

The province calls for residents to keep abreast of weather forecasts reported by the authority and warning announcements. As for fishermen, they should not set sail offshore during this period. The province encourages people to contact Trat’s office of disaster prevention and mitigation for assistance at 0-3952-5727-9.
