Fun ways to get in shape in Bangkok

The idea of getting in shape often incites feelings of dread and anxiety, especially if you’re not familiar with the post-workout bliss that motivates avid exercisers. But getting your workouts in doesn’t have to be boring. This is especially true when you live in a city where you are spoiled for choice. Not convinced? Check out this list of fun ways to get fit in Bangkok from our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand

Barre training

Founded and headquartered in New York City, Physique 57 is famous throughout the world for its full-body workouts that yield rapid results. And with it claiming to sculpt your body in just eight classes, it’s easy to see why. Even though Physique 57 is perhaps the most popular barre fitness studio, Bangkok also has many other barre classes to offer. If you’re not familiar with barre, it essentially uses your own bodyweight as resistance and targets your glute, thigh, abs, and arm muscles. Inspired by elements of ballet, Pilates, and yoga, the workouts combine strength training, cardio, and stretching to create a longer, leaner, and toner body.

Indoor cycling

Indoor cycling has been a staple fitness trend for quite some time, though it has evolved into more than just riding a stationary bike while following the instructor’s cues. With classes like SoulCycle and Flywheel gaining popularity in the West, Bangkok’s equivalent can be found in places such as Absolute Cycle, Ryde, and Tribe. Depending on the studio and instructor, spinning classes motivate riders with a soundtrack and light show that would make a nightclub jealous. While these classes can vary in difficulty and style, your ability to customize the intensity ensures a challenging workout that is bound to get your heart rate up.

Boxing

As the birthplace of Muay Thai (A.K.A Thai boxing), it’s no surprise that Thailand’s capital city has plenty of combat sports for you to choose from. With numerous gyms dedicated solely to boxing, you can enjoy the benefits of the sport while being trained by professional boxers. In fact, some Muay Thai gyms in Bangkok are training grounds for renowned boxers and MMA fighters. Boxing classes are available for all levels, offering an efficient full-body workout for anyone who’s interested. Whether you’re looking to exercise, to release pent-up energy, or aspire to compete, you’re bound to find a class that is right for you.

Bungee Workout

You might be surprised to know that the Bungee Workout you can find in New York City actually originated from Thailand. Launched in Bangkok’s very own Stories to Tales Theatre, Bungee Workout combines dance moves and bungee cords to deliver an exciting and unique workout. By integrating fitness, dance, and acrobatics to motivating music, the exercise turns cardio and weight training into an exhilarating activity. Even though it looks like it is geared towards professionals, Bungee Workouts are suitable for any level.

Alternative yoga

While alternative yoga is not actually a type of workout, it’s a way to group the different yoga classes that deviate from the norm. Aerial yoga, which also goes by the name anti-gravity yoga, is a hybrid form of yoga that allows you to perform poses while suspended in the air. Hanging less than a meter off the ground, the hammock acts like a swing, offering support and movement while you move through the sequences. Another one-of-a-kind workout from Bangkok that is worth mentioning is Silent Wine Yoga. As the name suggests, this yoga class incorporates a glass of wine (or beer/juice/tea) into your poses.

Dance classes

Bangkok is home to a wide selection of dance classes and studios. Whether you know what type of dance you want to do or are a complete novice, you’re guaranteed to find something you’ll enjoy. If you’d like to learn choreography while dancing, look into popular classes like ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. If you’re looking for social dancing, then salsa or tango would be more your speed. But if you just want to get a good workout in while moving to music then Zumba or pole dance might be what you’re after.

CrossFit

You’ve probably heard about CrossFit, a popular workout method that delivers intensive weight loss and impressive results. Available in Bangkok, CrossFit training programs are a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that combines strength and conditioning. With a typical session lasting up to 45 minutes, CrossFit sessions incorporate dynamic sequences and new workouts to keep things interesting. As a form of fitness that you’ll either love or hate, those that love it seem to meet like-minded individuals and form lasting friendships.

Trampoline gymnastics

Bounce your way to a fitter body at one of Bangkok’s trampoline parks. As an ideal training ground for aspiring acrobats and gymnasts, these indoor facilities provide trampolines, padding, and airbags so you can safely jump around. While a freestyle session will allow you to move around as you please, some trampoline parks have aerobics and gymnastics classes that you can sign up for. If bouncing around in public is not your thing, you might want to consider investing in a rebounder, or mini trampoline, to enjoy a fun workout at home.

With so many interesting options available, you can’t say that you don’t enjoy working out without giving them a go. While some of the best gyms in Bangkok provide the classes mentioned above, others take place in dedicated spaces. Be sure to ask about first-timer deals so you don’t have to pay full price to test it out.
