webfact
Suphan man caught monkeys - but Cambodian didn't want to buy them! Picture: Daily News Social media was abuzz with comment after people across five districts in Suphanburi in central Thailand reported that they had been invaded by an influx of monkeys over the last month. There were possibly 100s of the animals in Dan Chang, Sri Prajan, Derm Bang, Sam Chuk and Muang district. A "loony" was blamed for letting them loose in a post on "Suphan News" on Facebook. Yesterday Prasit, 24, turned himself in to Derm Bang Nang Buat police to face the music. He said that he had been in contact with a Cambodian man aged about 60 who offered him money if he could supply him with monkeys. He was prepared to pay anywhere between 300 and 600 baht each depending on size and was to take the monkeys he captured to Nakhon Nayok also in central Thailand. Prasit said he drove his Triton pick-up with back roof to the temple of Wat Tham Nam in Ratchaburi where he opened up the back leaving out dog food. This attracted about 20 monkeys, he said, that he managed to trap in the back. However, when he contacted the Cambodian with pictures of his catch he said they were the wrong size and reneged on the deal. Prasit then let them go in the Derm Bang area of Suphanburi, his home province. He now faces several charges related to illegal activity with protected species. It is believed that had the Cambodian man bought the monkeys they would have been on their way to China. Authorities doubt Prasit's story that it only involved 20 creatures as the influx in the area seems to be far greater. Investigations continue.
