BANGKOK (NNT) - The head of Phalang Pracharat Party has announced it has 10 people appropriate to run for the Bangkok governor’s seat, as the Ministry of Interior and Election Commission (EC) prepare to propose a local poll to the Cabinet.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wonguswan, as head of Phalang Pracharat Party, stated it has 10 members fit to run in a Bangkok gubernatorial election, but declined to give their names. Asked about rumors that he had asked Chachat Sittipphan to step aside in the race, Gen Prawit replied by saying that taking part in the election was a personal decision.

Deputy chief of the party, Phutipong Punnakan, made known that Gen Prawit has called a meeting of the party’s administrative board for next week, to finalize its candidate, reiterating it has several likely choices.

Asked if former Royal Thai Police Commander Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda was on the list, Phutipong responded by saying it remains to be seen if he is interested in such a role. On whether or not discussions were held with coalition member the Democrat Party on whether they would run, the deputy party head remarked only that it was understandable that every party would want to name a candidate and that further discussions would have to be held.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, meanwhile, said the Bangkok election will not yet take place before provincial races take place first, admitting, nonetheless, that the decision would be up to the Cabinet. He said that, while he has his choice for the capital’s post, it is unlikely the public would elect the individual.
