Ko Kradat: Where the deer roam free

I kept laughing out loud while rumbling down a dirt track on a motorbike that a farmer let me borrow for free. Deer pranced off into the brush. Sea eagles soared in search of fish offshore. Lizards scampered into holes. Apart from the animals and three coconut farmers, I did not spot another soul.

 

This was the scene when I visited Ko Kradat, which reminded me that Thai islands are far from predictable. If you like deer and empty beaches, this small island near Ko Mak in the Ko Chang archipelago is well worth a trip.

Launching from Ko Mak


Having finished a day of accommodation research for the Travelfish guide to Ko Mak, I rode a scooter past thick rubber groves and a couple of villages before the concrete lane turned to sand in the island’s sparsely developed northeast. There stretches Hat Laem Son, an ocher-sand beach with a lone seafood eatery shaded by pine-like son trees. From the shore, Ko Kradat looked like a pancake afloat on the sea.
