Former Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong went into monkhood on Thursday at the Hong Rattanaram Ratchaworawihan temple in Bangkok.

The name Apirat was given during ordination was “Apriachatano”, or a person who holds the three jewels of Buddhism – the Buddha, Buddhist doctrine and monkhood.

After retiring from his Army post, Apirat was given the post of deputy secretary-general at the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary.

General Chakthip Chaijinda had also ordained at this temple after retiring from his post as chief of Royal Thai Police. He had been ordained in the name Chintchayo, which meant a winner over the mind.
